Really nice and really fun to use!
This plane worked more than well enough straight out of the box. The plane blades were 'sharp' and worked as is. So you actually could just buy this and go to town making grooves without any fiddling. It really did eat away the wood very quickly. It really is a fun plane. The things I changed; The skate needed cleaned up and smoothed out with some file work. Not because it wasn't flat down the body but because of large burrs on both sides of the skate. This was done more to keep me from cutting myself on them. The blades were sharpened by some machine for sure and the backs were not flat at all. Again, it worked 'as is' but i still wanted them flattened and sharpened properly. This was by far the hardest steel I've had to flatten. I can guarantee it will keep its edge for a long time. The bevel was easy compared with the back. I also oiled and waxed up the body where appropriate.A couple tips: You just have to be careful the first few passes because, like other plow/plough planes, this will try follow the grain of the wood until a groove is started. At that point, tap the blade down a touch to take a deeper shaking to save yourself some time.

Gets the job done
This is a pretty decent plough plane for basic grooving needs. It requires a certain bit of tweaking to get it working properly but even the highest quality tools require some setup. Mainly, I cleaned up and honed the irons and took down the thickness of the varnish on the outriggers with some fine steel wool until the fence would slide without binding; out of the box, the fence would not budge without some firm taps with a soft hammer. Of course, with this type of plane you have to take the time to set the fence to distance & parallel by hand but once it is set, it stays in place. There is no adjustable depth stop, only the fixed rail which cuts to, I believe from memory, about 3/8" deep. I'll figure out a way to jury-rig an adjustable stop at some point.Otherwise, the rosewood body looks great, it's easy to use and a decent value with 5 irons from 1/8" to 1/2".

A very impressive tool for the price
I wanted a plane to use in my shop for doing just hand/finish work on small boxes. This plane is perfect and seems to impress my customers who want a custom box. The blades were a little rough when first unpackaged but just a little time spent honing them they took a great edge and hold them well. I practiced a bit on soft wood then moved on to oak and maple and it worked great. I had to sand the beams a little to smooth out their movement. Comparing this to some of the iron bodied planes out there at twice or more the price I would buy this plane again.

This worked okay, I just couldn't get used to cutting on the pull stroke, may just be me. the product was made well. It is a workable alternative to more expensive plow planes, though I've replaced it with a higher quality plane, and wish I would have gotten that to begin with.

OK for woodworker with no motorized (electric) woodworking tools.
If you have no Dado, or router, this is OK. You need to operate slowly, taking a LITTLE off each time through. Also you must keep the nuts tightened, since they tend to move. For the price, I would not recommend this tool.

This is a poorly made tool. It was clearly made from undesirable and probably unstable wood. The lacquer is incredibly thick and prevents the fence from moving without force. I may need to strip all the finish if I don't abandon the tool altogether. No depth stop. Blades are NOT hard steel. I took the time to properly sharpen one of the blades to a mirror polish, and one pass in hardwood ruined the edge. I wish I had bought the Veritas. At nearly 4 times the cost it may have been worth avoiding the headache. Reading other reviews has me wondering if I got the one lousy tool in a batch.

Four Stars
The fence adjustment could be better, but it's an inexpensive plane that does the job.

Great Product - Needs Better Instrux
This product does a fantastic job. The only improvement I would suggest is a little better instruction info.
