Captain Jon's Green Can Ammo Locking Hardware. Second Generation Now Stainless Steel and Easier to install. Still the Real Deal. Still High Quality. And still the Best and Easiest way out there to "Make your ammo can - Lockable and Safe. " One Piece 1/2" Solid Stainless Steel Stud and 5/16" Threads (Made in the USA) (PatPending) No thread locker compound needed. Ammo Can Waterproofing stays intact. (Thanks Bob Whitehead) The padlock stud is now a one piece design (post and thread together). Made from Solid (1/2") machined STAINLESS 303 STEEL. Made right here in the good old US of A. (Could of done it cheaper overseas but why?. The stud is secured with a nylon locknut that is Grade 8 Steel (zinc plated) thus eliminating the need for any thread locking compound. The watertight integrity of the can stays intact because we now include a Neoprene Washer that goes on the inside (or outside) . The large and small washers included are all steel and zinc plated for rust protection. The padlock stud will take up to a 1/4" lock shackle. Overkill, but once again why scrimp when security is your goal? Installation involves drilling one 11/32"or 5/16" hole, put on the neoprene washer, then the small metal washer, then the locknut and you are Done. Will work on all Ammo can lids. Slotted lids ( slotted lids require two ), Big hole lids, and Small hole lids. For the small hole lids some minor fitting may be needed. Very Minor. The stud is now a true 1/2" so any filing will be very minor as the lid hole is a 1/2" too. If you have a slotted lid or a large hole lid then NO filing/fitting will be needed. Buy these and you will not regret it. Remember - when you mean it , Green it. (tm) This product has a 100% guarantee. If for any reason it doesn’t meet your expectations, return it for a full refund.

Not for Harbor Freight cans
I should have read the other review on Harbor Freight ammo cans prior to purchasing. Followed the instructions to the T but the hole still didn't line up like it was supposed to. This is because the hole is small to begin with and also the latch closes at an angle, not parallel with the ammo can. With Harbor Freight cans, there just isn't a lot of room to work with on the latch. Be advised that you need a special drill bit to get through steel. The standard ones that most people have at home are made for wood. When all was said and done, I went to Home Depot and had spent an additional $8 on a cobalt drill bit, $6 on a metal file to widen and de-burr all the holes I made, and $7 on a Masterlock. Take seriously the recommendation to use eye and hand protection, because metal flakes will be flying everywhere, and be prepared to vacuum afterward. I now have a locked and functioning can and a sense of accomplishment, but had no idea what I was in for.

Superb
I've put in 4 of these so far. Absolutely excellent. Follow the very clear directions and it works great. SOLID materials. Could someone get into the can? Sure, eventually, if they steal it and smash the can or cut it up. But basically I think that we're all trying to DETER, most of all perhaps little ones in our homes, from getting to the ammunition (store it separately and lock the guns up, too). For THAT it's perfect. NO locking system is impervious to someone with unlimited time, determination and equipment. The idea is to deter and delay. Have no doubt that I'll buy more. Takes no more than 5 minutes to install using a hand drill, 1/2 and 5/16" bits and a little touch up of the metal with a small rat tail file to remove any drill burrs. You won't regret!

Solid locking mechanism, easy enough to install.
Installation instructions are clear. As long as you have a drill with appropriate bits you should be in good shape. 50cal cans with smaller holes in the plate require some drilling accuracy to ensure alignment. After installing this in 4 cans, my conclusion is that a metal file is a must to deburr any sharp edges after drilling.Attaching the lock mount is remarkable easy and my impression after installation is that this is a solid locking mechanism. No ammo can is totally secure to anyone with the right tools, the luxury of time and some brute force. This is certainly solid enough to keep the kids out.

Good Product, One Caveat
Hi! This is a well-designed and made product, which it should be for $10. If one can operate a drill and a wrench the installation is straightforward. I was a bit disappointed (though maybe I should have known) that the traditonal commonplace Master combo lock won't quite fit through the hole. The straight part of the shackle will but the curved part won't go through. I've got my boxes locked with Master locks anyway but it's less elegant.I didn't know what was meant by "Sheerness" as regards this product so I didn't provide a rating for that.

Good design but might compromise the seal
Easy to install. My can's front is exactly same as the one shown in the picture. So the front is not flat and it is uneven just on the spot where I need to drill. This leaves the nut and washer loosely touch the inner surface and I can see the gap between them, so the seal of the whole can is actually broken. But since I'm in California, humidity is not an issue at all, it might be ok for me. I might apply some glue/sillicon to it or just use the can for short term storage anyway.

Great idea, could be made better
I love the fact that you can turn almost any ammo can into an ammo safe or a basic gun safe.I only wish that they made one that had a bigger eyelet for a bigger lock. Not too hard to install but you need to be careful when drilling, because you need to drill the seam in order to install this kit. Also you find that you might have to enlarge the hole on the metal flap that closes the ammo can because it might rub if you don't. I believe there are Youtube vidoes on how to install this rather easily. Recommended

Good Product, but may require some work.
The product is good. But know that you may need to use a grinding tool to slightly widen the existing hole on the ammo can latch plate. I own many ammo cans ranging from 1971 to 2013. The locking stud would not fit through the hole on any of these without grinding. The modification took only two minutes. Then, the product performed as described. Therefore, I still give Five Stars.

A Mind Altering Device
It is always nice to be able to spend a few bucks and totally alter the manufacturer's specification of their product. The Ammo Box Can Lock Hardware Kit is inexpensive, built to order and PRECISELY just such a product. Now I can put a padlock (or cable lock) on an ammo can and it is totally secured. What a concept!
