John W. Schaum Piano Course: E -- The Violet Book

Tried and True
Irrespective of what the musical snobs may say, the Schaum classical compilations are outstanding. It's not easy to arrange classical music so that it can be accessible to players of varying abilities and backgrounds. Very often an easy arrangement will appear in an earlier book, then the same piece in a more difficult version in a later book. The student can progress with the knowledge and satisfaction that they really are cultivating a special relationship with great music while honing their pianistic skills.

I am so glad these are still made!
I took piano eons ago, when I was a kid. I was never that good, but there were a few songs that I still sit down to play once in a while. One of them is the abbreviated version of "The 1812 Overture" in this John W. Schaum book E. If you want a song that is not real difficult, but not too easy either, and will bring down the rafters and leave everybody clapping, it's this song! And I lost my book. I have all the other colors, but not the E-Violet. I am so glad that after 40 years it is still published so I can order another copy!Happy Reader

Learning to Play the Piano
I used the John W. Schaum Piano Course when I took piano lessons as a child. I think it's a great series. When I returned to playing as an adult, I bought all the books in the series, started at the beginners book and worked forward. I found my recall was enhanced by the familiarity of the book and by the logical steps these books make in teaching piano. I recommend the book and the series to anyone learning or returning to piano.

Excellent Method
John Schaum piano method is what I have been using to teach piano for over 25 years. The amount of information is worked into every song, building upon each lesson. This isn't an easy book but if you follow the path with the Red, Blue, etc. you/your student will be able to play some formidable music, and have good knowledge of theory.

Great material for the aspiring piano player.
I learned on these books waaaay back in the early 1960s. They're still a great approach to learning. And now that I teach, I use the whole series - in addition to outside pieces as part of the transition away from them - to expose students to the wealth of music Classical composers gave us, many of which have no contemporary equivalents.

Not as good as the earlier books
Some nice songs but not as good as the earlier books. Still good to have practice and for the price still a good buy.
