Yes - holds a full strip of staples and yes, they are standard size.

Does it open up so that I can use it for bulletin boards?

No, unfortunately it doesn't open like that. Otherwise it is great.

How often does it jam? How easy is it unjam?

It jammed for me and will never work again. That's after 10 months. Junk.

Is there a trick to closing it? I opened it to load the staples & now it wont close.

perhaps you have too many staples in the new line. I have not had a problem
