It's a good microphone but I don't think we've been able to make sound better than the Neumann K105.

That's right! When I A/B test my KSM9 with the legendary hyper-cardioid microphone -- used in more movies and TV shows than you can count -- the KSM9 beats the Sennheiser 416 on off-axis rejection in a noisy environment. Of course, this is what it's for -- stage singing with a loud band, pianists who want to pick up their voice and not the sound of their fingers hitting the keys, etc. Plus, the vocals are DELICIOUS. You're about 80% of the way to a large diaphragm condenser, which is very good. It's not going to beat a U87 head-to-head on body and richness, but it will sure as heck beat the other classic stage mics. And good luck singing into a U87 in any live setting! Plus, I often sing better with a handheld because it becomes a part of my body more than a shoe-sized wonder box. Do not be afraid to use this in film production in challenging environments. The self-noise is low enough and like I said -- its off-axis beats the most famous mic that is dedicated to this purpose.
