The oddest franchise phenomenon in the whole history of motion pictures!
I started off with this franchise on the wrong foot. The first one I saw was part 2, one of the most dreadful, cheaply made, abysmal and uninspired Alien rip-offs, and I just recently saw part 3, aptly subtitled "Watch the Skies" (which rings to me more like a suggestion: watching anything else instead would work a whole lot better). However, I was intrigued by the high rating on imdb for this one (5.6 for a horror movie is usually masterpiece status in my book), and the synopsis. I have to say this was nothing short of a revelation to me! This has to be the most outlandish, bizarre, surreal, gooey and creative monster film to ever come out of the UK! Very, very unlike it's cash-in, in-title-only-successors, this is not only pretty well done, but original, inspired, and even stylish (yes, there's a lot of work and heart put in the lighting, the special, make up and visual effects, the acting, the editing, the music, the art department, and even the shots are well-thought of and extremely creative ; it feels like everyone put the best they got on it). Even some of the lines would fit in most criteria for "classic" (especially the ones by Joe, the stepfather). The whole affair feels sort of what it would be like if Ken Russell had made a movie for Hammer if the company had caught up with the times back in the 80s (I think one of the reasons, among several, that the rest of the franchise fails way beyond miserably, is because just as the original wouldn't work outside a British context, so the prospect of any sequels). It does seem like it comes from Spielberg's Close Encounters and ET, but if that's so, it goes above and beyond being an exploitative take on those. Among many many other things, the whole Freudian angle and the "remotely controlled" toy element truly set this creature-feature-creature apart from the rest. Berenice Stagers is an icon of the horror genre in every right. She's played very similar roles in Macabre (Lamberto Bava), Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II, which are also classics in my book, in almost equal measure. I read somewhere that she doesn't like the genre, which is almost impossible for me to believe. She's right up there with Barbara Steele and was born for it! Sad to learn about Philip Sayer, who did an outstanding job and had a really brooding presence, perfectly suited for his role. There's even some surprising and most welcome eye candy provided by Myriam D'Abo (one of the cutest Bond girls ever to walk the face of the planet and relative to the almost equally beautiful Olivia D'Abo from The Wonder Years) in her debut film.Even though this is an European release, it does play for me and is as much a labor of love as the movie itself. Most likely the film never looked or sounded as beautiful as it does this time. It's pretty packed with extras (the one I just watched was as long as a feature film, with interviews with Bromley-Davenport, Bernice Stagers, producer Mark Forstarter, Tik and Tok -whose contributions to the film are inconmensurable- , the excellent "get in the car" guy and even the lovely lady who pulled off the most excruciatingly painful delivery ever put on film. Davenport even explains what the panther is doing in this movie, which was a touch in much, much need of such explanation and, according to Davenport himself (I'm not quoting literally), was "expensive, unnecessary, and absolutely brilliant."This movie is truly age-defining (the stuff that makes the 80s so special and missed by us who grew up back then) and this release is beyond supreme. Forgot to mention. Never would've imagined Davenport, who looks like a really cool, down to earth guy, was an accomplished keyboardist and composer, too. The soundtrack for the movie is included on CD! There's also a booklet loaded with tons of info and, as they used to say where I grew up, "profusely illustrated!"

SPACE ODDITY
"Xtro" is a cautionary tale about what may happen if Daddy was kidnapped by aliens and then three years later........he returns... It's how Dad returns that has to be one of the most outrageous, slimiest, and twistedly funny scenes I can recall, at this moment, ever seeing.......More on that later.Mom and Dad, Rachel and Sam with their young son Tony are staying at their cottage in the countryside outside of London. Rachel leaves to do some errands and father and son are playing fetch with the family pet. The sky blackens, winds reach hurricane force and a shaft of light envelops Dad and he vanishes.Three years later Rachel and Tony are living in their apartment in London along with Analise, a French Au Pair and Rachels new boyfriend, Joe.Rather than detail the whole story, their are some scenes that should be explored including Dad's outrageous return to Mother Earth.A small space vessal crashes in the countryside and a creature resembling a combination of a piranha, reptile and a grasshopper, slithers and hops towards the cottage once occupied by the family, taking a brief timeout to kill a nosy motorist and his girlfriend.A young woman now residing at the cottage is attacked and knocked unconscious by the pir-rep-hopper creature and it then prceeds to mouth-rape her.Now for the outrageous scene---when the girl wakes up she finds herself 9 months pregnant with a baby bump the size of an over-sized beach ball and something is trying to claw its way out. She falls to a sitting position on the floor, wracked with contraction pain and as her legs spread, out slides Father Sam all six feet of him, covered in slime and after-birth as he savagely chomps down and severs the umbilical cord.Father and son now reunited, the son is horrified to witness his father greedily slurping down the contents of the eggs from Tonys pet snake. Tony runs away but Dad finds him and convinces Tony that he has changed and needed the snake eggs. Sam then bites down on Tonys shoulder and transfuses some of his alien DNA into him.Tony starts to turn alien and with the help of a midget clown with a rubber hammer, AnaLise is knocked unconscious and Tony tranfuses her which turns her into a human egg sac and the eggs bright as Easter eggs slide down a chute fron inside to outside her body.Father and son now completely morphed into pir-rep-hopper creatures prepare to return to whence pir-rep-hopper creatures come from but first alien dad kills his wifes new boyfriend. Apparently even ugly, evil aliens get jealous."Xtro" is one of my guilty pleasures from the 80's and one of the film's assets is, at 83 minutes it plays like half that time. And there are no "filler" scenes to pad the running time-every scene speeds to the next one. The movie may be outlandish, outrageous, gory and unbelievable but hey, that's its charm and although I remember the movie, Father's rebirth scene I will never forget.

Crazy good monster sci fi shocker
80s classic. Complete schlock but, the great kind of schlock. Blu Ray transfer is impressive for a low budget 80s film and the features are very good. Horror/sci-fi fans will find something to love

I love this movie!
Not only is this movie a cult classic, I've liked this film for years. An alien comes to Earth and has to take the form of a human. The only way it can do this is to be born from a woman. The rebirth, so to speak, is one of the coolest (and shocking!) moments I've ever seen on a sci-fi film. A must-see for horror and science fiction fans. No doubt!

"..CLASSIC 80'S SCI-FI.."
Tony's father Sam, abducted by aliens three years earlier, returns to earth and seeks out his wife and son, but Rachel has since been living with Joe and the reunion is awkward. Joe doesn't trust Sam, and Rachel can't quite decide what her feelings are for her two men. Sam is not the same as when he left, and he begins affecting Tony in frightening ways. This movie is another lost classic from back in 1982, great sci-fi with some cool effects and good creature make-up and weird stuff going on all the way through! Some good bloody moments too, It may look a bit dated but if you love these trashy movies from the 80's then make sure you have this in your collection even if its just to see the beautiful Maryam d'Abo (bond girl from the living daylights) when she was younger and naked! The movie is English language, filmed mainly in England too.If you buy the German hardbox version it is uncut 74-mins, good picture DVD, some features like bio's etc nothing special, some of the audio in places is not in English for some reason it cuts to German for a short while then goes back to English, its nothing that effects the movie but cant be altered.
