can you taste the rubber?

There is no rubber. It is the texture of the plastic itself, not a rubber coating. There is no taste at all.

Oil from my fingers shows up easily on the surface. What's the best way to clean it, and is there any cleaning solution I should avoid using?

I've noticed this from time to time. I find that a little water on a soft cloth (I use a drying towel from my kitchen) does the trick. A mild soap or a combination of warm water and baking soda would probably be okay, but definitely avoid any harsh soaps or rough materials as these could degrade the material. Hope this helps!
