Navigating With a GPS: Effective Skills for the Outdoors (Cicerone Mini-guides) Paperback – October 1, 2008

Save your money as this book is approximately 1/3 about navigating with a map and compass which means the title is a litte misleading. It is way to technical and has little practical advice to benefit a new user. You will be better off to study the manual that comes with your GPS. At least I can say that is true for a Garmin which is what I have. I thought maybe this book would teach me a few new tricks, but you can forget that. This book will be of little use to a hunter or general hiker and will not enlighten you on much that your GPS owners manual doesn't cover. Most readers who want to learn about a GPS more than likely understand navigation with map and compass already so a lot of the book is wasted reading. It is a nice size and has a good plastic cover on it. Gary Knepper

Having bought a GPS (Garmin eTrex 20) to help me avoid getting lost in unfamiliar places - a result of getting lost in Sienna, when trying to make the rendezvous for my coach party- I needed to learn to use it .. The Garmin manual being to my mind useless as a guide (though their free programme Base Camp is excellent) I looked for an instruction book and chanced upon this little book, it has told me all and more that I need to know, Not only does it give fullest instructions for using a GPS but gives full details of basic map and compass navigating but also includes a Romer scale to assist with bearings and grid references. My only very slight reservation is that the print is rather small (though very clear) which at my age makes good light necessary to read it in comfort. Highly Recommended

Getting rather dated but it does give you a good grounding in what the technology can offer.

Lovely little book, very neat. Would be nice if it was updated to the most modern GPS
