Product Description Final Analysis (DVD)Psychological thriller about a psychiatrist who becomes a murder suspect after allowing himself to become more than professionally involved with two wacky sisters.]]> .com This film, which again pairs Richard Gere and Kim Basinger (who starred in 1986's No Mercy), offers up elements of classic noir: a hapless man becomes intimately involved with a beautiful blonde who may or may not be who or what she appears to be. Dedicated psychiatrist Isaac Barr (Gere) reluctantly, and then more obsessively, becomes involved with Heather Evans (Basinger), the sister of his patient, Diana Baylor (Uma Thurman). Evans is unhappily married to a gangster (appropriately played by a muscular and menacing Eric Roberts in a trademark role). Gere and Basinger make a credible, if dangerous couple, and Thurman delivers a subtle, understated performance and demonstrates her range and potential. The thriller is appropriately shot in gorgeous San Francisco, where the literal and figurative curving and hilly roads wind throughout. Credit legendary art director Dean Tavoularis for some amazing sets and scenes, notably the elegantly cavernous restaurant where Evans and her husband have a fateful dinner. This film is, in a way, glossy director Phil Joanou's Hitchcockian tribute--as a climactic lighthouse scene best demonstrates. Final Analysis doesn't offer an intimate look at its characters, but a beautifully stylized one, moody and gloomy. The intricate plot experiments with the device of "pathological intoxication," in which the subject completely loses control after drinking alcohol. And this doesn't mean a conventional ugly drunk; it means a frightening psychotic. Good and evil, hope and despair, beauty and repulsion are often juxtaposed in the film's complex world. --N.F. Wild femme fatale film noir thriller
What happens when you collectively bring in world class actors and actresses and give them as a present a solid, professional film noir screenplay with enticing twists and turns and then throw the plot into the burning fire of a femme fatale (coming into her maturity) - well, you have a minor classic like Final Analysis with Richard Gere (as the psychiatrist), Kim Basinger (as his patient and girlfriend), Uma Thurman (as the ready to spread her femme fatale wings sister), and powerful actor Eric Roberts (as the somewhat sadistic husband to the unfaithful wife and brother-in-law to the dangerous sister-in-law). We watched it when it came out; we have watched it on rainy nights; and we just watched it for the fourth time, because it is so enjoyable to see a movie hit all high notes and then go for it up in the bell tower lighthouse. It is an adult movie with adult themes; however, it is subtle and intelligent beyond being risque. The ending is wild; the crescendo is excellent; and the denouement is right on the money. Nicely done.

If u like Kim Bassinger...this is A+
Not a big fan of Richard Gere, but a HUGE fan of Kim Bassinger. Excellent movie and it hold up well with time. Released in 1992, it's still timeless in 2023! I watched it again with a friend who IS a psychiatrist and she found no fault with the medical terminology, etc. Great movie: passion, sex, betrayal, and a couple of good plot twists down the line! Plan this one for a rainy day...

Psychological mystery
This 1992 film was not a major box office success, but holds up well as a psychological mystery. Richard Gere plays a psychiatrist treating an enigmatic patient (Uma Thurman) who is unbalanced and emotionally dependent on her older sister. The sister (Kim Basinger) may be the victim in an abusive relationship, or she may be a manipulative psychopath. After a murder is committed and the psychiatrist testifies for the defense, he comes to realize that there was more to the picture than he initially assumed: both he and the patient were pawns in a larger game. Although the climactic scene in a lighthouse is largely borrowed from Hitchcock’s Vertigo, the plot twists are intriguing and the film sustains interest.

Don't judge a movie by its cover
If you come across Final Analysis and are expecting a steamy, romantic, love story between Kim Basinger and Richard Gere then you may be slightly disappointed. However, if you are expecting a mysterious, psychological thriller, with a twist ending then this is the movie for you. I was one of the former mentioned people after seeing a scene of this movie on Oxygen. When I was finally able to have it to watch I suddenly became more interested in the psychology and mystery of the story rather than the relationship between Kim and Richard. Even if you're one of those people who thinks they've figured out the end as soon as it starts, this movie is still worth the watch for the dialouge and acting. I would recommend this film to anyone as a good movie, but they will either be surprised or disappointed with it after they watch it, but it's worth finding out so order yourself a copy and check it out for yourself.
