Peter, Margaret and Wayne discover a Roman boat in a cave that contains the manuscript of young Pompey.  The discovery changes the tiny little town of Gamma into a brash, hyped-up tourist center. The children also find that their lives change too - and they dont like what is happening.  The manuscript found in the boat reveals that the boat is cursed; and until the boat is destroyed it will continue to curse all that come into contact with it.  The children must decide whether to save the boat, or destroy the boat and save Gamma.

Peter and Pompey
"Peter and Pompey" was made in 1988 by the Australian Children'sTelevision Foundation which was a non-profit organizationestablished to ensure that children have access to high qualitymedia created especially for them. There were a number oftelevision productions made under this banner and this featureis one of them.Although it is good, clean, wholesome entertainment aimedspecifically at children and the fact that children have importantroles to play in the features, they still provide reasonably goodentertainment for adults should they care to watch them. The story which is set in present day Australia is based onmythology. In other words there is no factual evidence to supportit, so you can believe it if you want to.Three children including Peter discover an ancient Roman boat in acave near their coastal town in Queensland. The cave also containsthe manuscript of young Pompey who with his father and others werecast adrift in the ocean to avoid political persecution at the handsof the Romans. After a long voyage at sea, they arrived off thecoast of Queensland. Dying of thirst and starvation, Pompey's father(the leader of the expedition) made a pact with the Gods whereby hepledged to burn the boat if the Gods intervened and saved them. This the Gods did but due to unforeseen circumstances he was notable to burn the boat and until it is destroyed it will continue tocurse all who come into contact with it.The story tells how the curse adversely influences the lives of thechildren and the small town in which they live. The children mustdecide whether to save the boat or destroy it and save their littletown.A good, interesting story well played out. It is harmless fun andworth the time to sit and watch it.There are a few quotes in the dialogue which are strictly Australianbut that should not bother anyone.

Romans downunder
This is a nice little venture. Good for elementary and middle school aged kids. A story of greed vs virtue.
