Neurodivergent protagonist!
Spinelli successfully developed attacks from the point of view of a neurodivergent child. This book has proven very relatable to students who struggle with disabilities, and it is appropriate for grade levels well beyond that and the character in the book.I had an 8th grader request this text, stating that he had previously started it, but hadn't the opportunity to finish it.It is important to note that the plot does not follow common conventions, so when teaching about plot in conjunction with Spinelli's, Loser, teachers may want to specifically discuss the climax and its relationship to an internal struggle for the main character.

A Must Read
Should be required reading in all college of education programs and for all teachers who have not yet read it. Great empathy-building and self-reflection tool for teachers and their students.

Classic
I read this in school and never forgot it. Such a touching and lovely story about a young man who struggles with acceptance and understanding in a world made cruel. The main character's heart, strength, and joy put a smile on my face and a tear to my eye. Wonderful for all readers, young and old!

My son had to read for a summer book report project.
My son had to read this for a book report. I usually buy the paperback, audible version, and Kindle version when he has to do these types of assignments in order to minimize excuses. I can say hey work on your book report whether we are home or on the go lol... He hates that... Since we waited until the last minute to work on his summer reading project I ended up listening to the Audible version and I read much of it on the Kindle app with him while we were on the road. I must say it’s a very good book. My son and I enjoyed it. It gave us a-lot to talk about. I found this book to be very helpful even to prep him for the first day of school. We live in a culture that if you are different you will encounter so many challenges. The funny thing is we all are different some are able to fit in a little easier but I think we’ve all have had some or many of the feelings the little protagonist had in this book! A great coming of age take for kids! I loved this kid Zinkoff because he reminded me of how I was growing up in so many ways and he has many similarities to my son. Great read! Read it with your kids.

also both excellent books). This book will make you and your ...
This is the first Jerry Spinelli book that my third grade son read and it launched him into reading many other Spinelli books (such as Maniac Magee and Wringer, also both excellent books). This book will make you and your child think deeply about how not every child will fit into the mold of what most kids and adults consider popular or successful (such as the great athlete or the straight A student). The "Loser" in this book does not have these more commonly accepted gifts of athletic ability or great academic performance. But as you progress through the book, you grow to really appreciate the specialness and lovability of the main character. Highly recommended.

Good reading
I really liked this book. It was very exciting when Claudia went missing and Zinkoff spent the night in the snowstorm looking for her. I recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t like reading because it will change your mind. I didn’t like that the waiting man was still waiting but that is true to life.i really liked the ending, but no spoiler here, you’ve got to read it yourself. Enjoy!

Put On Your Giraffe Hat For Full Experience
I personally love this book and have since I read it in 8th grade. The copy I read then only had the front cover reading "Loser" smeared on a drawn chalkboard. No description. Curiosity got the best of me and all I can say is that it exceeded my expectations...Mostly because I didn't know what to expect. Honestly, it's hard to describe. If you want it summed up, I guess you could say it's essentially like being a kid in a classroom all over again, only you're seated next to and inside the mind of That One Funny Misfit Kid-Zinkoff. (Also, that name is awesome.) ^.^

Poor quality
I bought this book to replace my older edition that had seen better days. The very first time I opened it, it wouldn’t open all the way. After I was done reading one chapter to my students, the spine had cracked right in the middle. I understand that mass market quality is not as good as what you get in the bookstore, but I was expecting it to last a few years.
