Winter Backpacking: Your Guide to Safe and Warm Winter Camping and Day Trips (Heliconia Press)

This is a clearly written book, with lots of general information on winter camping. I was looking for a general information book, and this gives a nice introduction to a lot of the details that go into winter camping. I enjoyed the comparisons between different sleeping bags, snowshoes, and shelter designs... etc. Its nice to get some perspective on how these different variations operate and which might be best for a particular situation. It seems like a pretty complete and thorough overview of Winter camping. ( the check lists and the focus on preparation are particularly useful and insightful)The book, however is hard to take seriously, as both the photography and the illustrations are childish. Virtually every photo shows happy, smiling people. It looks like an instgram feed... where every image is a moment of joyful perfection. Do we really need a big goofy smile on Ben's face as he flips a pancake at breakfast with his GF smiling at his feat in the background? Or Ben's GF looking at him inside the tent, with a big smile on her face? We dont need to be told how fun winter camping is! We are either interested or we are not.... This is really an editing problem more than a writing, or even photography problem. Do we need more books that look like commercial TV? Isn't that what we are trying to escape by doing things like winter camping?Im still not sure Im going to keep this book... I prefer a more serious book, and clearly that is a reflection of me and my approach to getting out in the winter to camp .... but if you like silly TV shows, you will love this book, as you will feel right at home.

This is a great book that covers every aspect of winter camping. This is great for beginner winter backpackers and campers. I feel like I'm easily annoyed with sponsorship and this has one obvious one. I love Mountain Hardwear gear but was annoyed seeing their name on every photo, sometimes multiple times. Minor complaint. Buy this if you want to do winter outdoor activities.

Me husband has been going out on winter treks with my Dad for several years now. I thought this would be a great book for him to read through and have information for retreats he plans on the future. He really enjoys it.

This is a great book which covers a lot of the basics you need. The author is a great guy as well. Ben Shillington saved my butt in the New York Adirondack High Peaks. My stove wasn't working, 7 miles in, water frozen solid, 0 degress F. He managed to fix my stove for me.

I memorized this book prior to my first Winter Survival Trek along the Missouri River in SD at temps at and below 0 degrees. There were so many helpful hints and tricks that kept me and my teammate warm and energized throughout our race and through the night! Best book I ever bought!!

Eventhough I haven't been able to use the information just yet. Middle of summer. I think it has prepared me for what lies ahead, and the information is also good for general backpacking and camping knowledge.

Even with all the free "advice" online, this very thorough book includes a lot of helpful information.
