there is nowhere to buy supplies for this printer it came without ink ribbon and it only prints on one type of paper the ekatherm that is scarcely available at a high cost...cant use it professionally it isn't cost efficient.

Obsolete
I bought this printer without enough research and found out it is difficult to get paper for it. The printer worked, but was not worth the asking price...

It's ok... but
I wish I could give this printer 5 stars. Where to begin...1. If you are using this printer with a mac, know that iPhoto and Aperture do not output sizes correctly. This is a real pain as I use Aperture and now I have to export the whole image and open it in Photoshop to print.2. The ExtraLife coating on Matte paper looks absolutely aweful. I actually called Kodak because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. They told me to try it without ExtraLife: it looked great. The rep then pretty much told me that Glossy paper with ExtraLife would look similar to Matte without ExtraLife. So I ordered the glossy, tried it and was really happy with the results. But if you want true Matte prints with the ExtraLife, don't bother. Makes me wonder why they even offer it. How bad is it? REALLY bad.3. Having to change paper and ribbon to switch to Glossy was understandable but how does that fit into your workflow? And then the same thing when you want to change to a bigger size... Today we tried to print an image that wouldn't work as an 8x10 - it needs to be 8x12... So I've got to remove an unfiunished media kit and put in the larger 8x14 kit. Pain.Having said that. I am quite pleased with the quality of the finished print. Colour and resolution are great. It's not as amazing as some higher end Epson ink jets but the prints are very durable, long lasting and come out very quick which in a photo business environment is great. Also, the technology is much more straight forward and reliable than ink jets which - in my experience - clog up and always need cleaning and replacing. You can also get a much better handle of the (cheaper) cost per print with this printer. So... what am I going to do?Well... here's my repsonse to the 3 main issues I identified above:1. Wait for Kodak and Apple to update the drivers and print software. I'll harass them periodically and it will probably happen this year.2. I won't offer Matte prints (crazy I know).3. I will buy a second printer and keep it stocked with the larger 8x14 media. Yes, you read correctly: I'm buying another one!Still... 3 stars for now because I think they could have built an overall better product with some minor tweaks.

Pictures are nearly perfect
I've had this printer for about a year, having purchased it for $340 including a rebate that Kodak occasionally offers on the product. I use it with a G5 PPC Mac. Over the course of the year, Kodak has upgraded the firmware several times. One of the firmware upgrades left the printer unable to feed paper without manual assistance, but the latest upgrade solved that problem.Let's get one thing out of the way: there is no comparison between this and inkjet printers, at least not any that are even close to this price point. Low end inkjet printers produce flat-looking photos that often fade with light exposure. Inkjets often jam up with one color or another if you don't print from them quite regularly. I use a laserprinter for my regular output, so my old inkjet was used only for photo output. If I went too long - say a week or two - I had to run several cleaning cycles, then hope for the best. These are not problems with the Kodak. Here, you get beautiful depth that rivals professional Kodak processed prints.Yes, it's heavy, it's noisy, and it takes up a lot of space. All true. But the photos look like photos, not something your kid printed at school. Yes, the paper is expensive, but again you get what you pay for. The setup is straightforward, hookup via USB works without difficulty, and print time is very fast. It starts printing almost immediately after you hit the print button, so there's very little processing time. In about a minute or so, you have your first page. The accompanying Kodak software works well, and iPhoto will also interface with the 1400 if that is your preference. I'm sure there are many other choices that I haven't explored. The 4 stars rather than 5 are not about photo quality but rather are the result of the occasional paper misfeed (which Kodak seems to have solved in firmware), the high cost relative to alternatives, and the noise.

Kodak has a HOME RUN !
I have been a photographer for over thirty years. The 1400 makes prints which rival the quality of a pro lab. I used to spend $25+. and wait a week for quality I now have available at the press of a button. I hope Kodak does well with this printer as I will be a customer for a very long time. Thanks Kodak. The 1400 makes me feel all warm and fuzzy :-) And the price????? Incredible deal!

Works good for a short time
This printer was good for two months, then the paper started to mis-align in the printer. If you search the net, you will find this is a common problem with this model. The prints are excellent - professional quality, but be aware that it has a known issue that there doesn't seem to be a fix for. With the price for each paper replacement near $90, the price per print is now prohibitive compared to what you can get with inkjet.Unfortunately, if you're looking for an inexpensive dye sub printer, this just isn't reliable enough to justify the purchase.

A word of caution:
I have not (yet) purchased this printer but the specs seem fine,BUT,for Windows users the ONLY driver provided by Kodak is for XP.If you use Win98 or WinME, you may wish to wait for Kodak to provide drivers for these still-popular Operating Systems.

Supplies may not be available for this great printer.
This WAS a fantastic printer. Unfortunately, I can no longer find the print rolls for this. Additionally, I have not been able to find drivers for Windows 8. Drivers are available for MAC, however. Since I printed proofs and day to day prints on an Epson 1800, not having this available was not a big deal. If you are considering this printer, make sure you can find a supplier for the required media.
