KUNZ Spokeshave, Half Round

Works wonderfully after a sharpening. I dont know why people are having a hard time sharpening the blade. After all, if you're looking into such a one off tool, you likley have the the skills, resources, and wherewithal to figure it out.I just used a mop on a bench grinder with some green compound. Alternated sides of the bevel about 20 times with quick passes. Went from gouging and shredding pine wood fibers to a glaze finish on the same piece of wood.Side note: upon arrival, blade was set to deep with chip breaker to close to the blade edge. Spend 20 minutes of sharpending and fussing with setup.It's not the tool, it's the user!

There may be some reason why this otherwise handy tool doesn't have adjustment screws, but I'm not seeing it, and I think I'd reach for it more frequently if adjustment weren't such a pain.

I have recently started to work curved and carved surfaces into my cabinet projects. These two spokeshaves looked like a reasonable alternate to the Lee Valley $100+ tools. The colors are "funky" but you never "lose the tool on your tool bench". I checked the edges before I started to use them. For a factory edge they are very sharp. The handles seem small at first but you quickly get used to them. The adjusting nuts are easy to use. The tool can be adjusted easily to take a big or little bite. Big bites are limited by your arm. I got confused by the AMAZON description of Concave Spokeshave. When you order this item you get both convex and concave - just like the picture. No problem if you order a separate convex one, give one as a gift. My Son scratched his head and wondered what it was for - now he is using it.The first thing I worked on was the 18" jointer push block I made out of reclaimed 100+ year old 1/4 sawn oak. This wood is so hard you can't drive a nail into it. It slows down every 3 HP motor I have, jointer, table saw, planer, etc. With rounded handle and soft edges - no more blisters and splinters. Sharp blade will allow you to work on end grain in thin passes. Knots do slow you up but persistence overcomes most knots. Moral - develop patience or buy soft wood. These tools cut.

The shave is a nice tool; however, it'll need a good "going-over" in order to make it a usable tool in the shop. I found the base of the tool heavily machined and needing some TLC in order to make it smooth and usable. I think Kunz could have done a better job at the factory for what you're being charged for the tool. Keep in mind that most all edge tools need to be tuned up before use...as for the spokeshave? I like it and it's a good user in my shop!

Like all their handtools, this is built large & sturdy & will certainly outlive most carpenters use. I was a bit startled by its size, but it is made to work for sometime.

I have several projects that require rounded edges and I don't own a lathe. This seemed like a good tool to tackle them. I wish I had payed more attention the reviews.I thought that, notwithstanding, the negative reviews I could make this spokeshave work if I put in the time and effort. Sadly, I was wrong. I really enjoy tuning hand planes. I have restored several vintage planes that I use all the time. I also really enjoy sharpening. It give me a sense of satisfaction to put a great edge on a tool and to be able to admire the shaving it takes.First of all machining on this item is extremely poor. It supposedly is from Germany where one would expect much more than this product delivers. The machining marks on the sole of the plane as well as the iron are extremely crude. The sole of this plane is quite small so there is no excuse for this. Also, as another review has said the iron is not in same arc as plane mouth.The iron is also very poorly machined and of very poor quality. It is virtually impossible to achieve a sharp edge even after spending a huge amount of time flattening the back to 12,000 grit. This is the worst tool I have purchased in many years. I wish I could send it back, but I'm sure I have done too much to it to try and make it work to allow me to return it. This tool from is of such poor quality that it would be have been an expensive mistake at half the price. Kunz should be be ashamed of manufacturing this piece of junk and retailing it for almost $40.00.

I have mixed emotions about this one. Didn't work at all out of the box. I have tons of hand planes and spokeshaves. I know they need honing/ sharpening out of the box, even some of my premium lie nielsen products do. However this iron needed an extreme amount of work on my stones to get flat and sharp. Then the body itself needed a ton of flattening on the blade bed before it would even take a shaving. The cap iron needed work aswell. Overall I have probably 4 to 6 hrs of work to make this thing cut and it can still use more work.

The blade is a bit difficult to adjust to my satisfaction, but once it is, it works great. The handles permit accurate of "angle of attack" so the amount of wood removed in a stroke can be controlled. The blade is very sharp and needed only a little stropping.
