I have six Quarter Horses and a grade quarter horse (half mustang). There is a lot of variability in the conformation of the jaws. This curb strap does a great job of fitting all of my horses. One may need a leather punch to get the perfect fit, by adding a hole between the existing ones. The hardware is smooth and the leather and stitching is good quality. I highly recommend treating the leather before putting it on the horse, I use Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP Leather Preservative, Leather New, or Lexol. I have just started (in the past three months) Obenauf's so I can't attest to how well it works over time. But it is great at water proofing leather. So far, it works great. Curb straps on a ranch often get wet, so it is important to treat the leather before you put it on. It is also important to have a curb strap that one can take off and on occasionally for cleaning and retreating (once every six months to a year). The ones with nylon straps are more difficult to get on and off. I like my leverage bits to rotate only about 30 degrees or so before the curb strap engages. That is one or two fingers between the jaw and strap on one side. With that in mind, I find this strap more than large enough to fit my horses. The curb strap is the fulcrum of leverage bits so I find the width adequate without causing pinching or too much pressure.

I was genuinely excited to discover Weaver Leather products on Amazon at such an affordable price, and this curb strap did not disappoint. The quality is exceptional, made with thick leather that feels both durable and reliable. It has easily adjustable straps, which comfortably fit different bits and shank sizes. I recommend this product. It's an essential addition to any tack box and will undoubtedly serve both you and your horse well. Five stars for this fantastic find!

As a rule, I do not use shanked bits or curb bits for my horses. If they can't behave or perform as asked in a simple copper or rubber snaffle, then we need to go back to basic training because I haven't finished the horse's education. However, we're working with a neighbor's mare who arrived with a nasty shanked bit and narrow chain curb. She also came with bruises to her bars and chin and sore lips. I've moved the mare to an old fashioned grazing bit and this leather curb strap while we work on re-schooling her. She's responding well and no longer flinging her head or gaping at the mouth to avoid pain. Eventually, she may be fully safe to ride anywhere and comfortable in a bitless bridle, but between now and then, this leather curb is fine. It fits properly and doesn't pinch or twist or roll over. It makes contact without pain or excessive pressure. I've been able to get the mare out on back country trails under complete control without punishing her mouth every time I touch the reins.
