My new Lid for Volcano II was delivered very soon after ordering. Unit appears just as shown and seems to be of good quality. This will go in my bag for camping but have also been using my Volcano II on the back deck. It really holds in the heat so you can turn the flame way down to the point of almost going out - a real fuel and time saver. So far very satisfied. I haven't tried it with wood or charcoal but see no reason it wont work as well - Careful on removing while the stove is burning - HOT - use the thongs!

Works like a charm, but...BEWARE
Contains asbestos fibers. It is such a brilliant design concept: a lightweight and pack-able grill lid that's also well made. The big bad PROBLEM (unbeknownst to me, though perhaps I should have surmised) occurred in my (over-) handling of it as I folded it up after my first use in order to put it back into its original wrapper the next day. Multiple asbestos "slivers."I rechecked the lid's "hang-tag," the product description here, and the Q & A here before contacting Volcano Grills. The only answer here in Q & A as to "What's it made of?" came from a consumer, not "The Seller," so I called them to formally inquire about its "content" and to explain I'd gotten tiny shards in my fingertips from the handling of it. The agent said he'd never heard of that happening before, but said wearing gloves might be a good solution for my situation.I urged him to pass on to Volcano-Grills' marketing/packaging people the need for a fiber-content Warning-Sticker to be slapped onto the lids' packages ASAP. It's bad enough for an adult to need to use a 10X magnifier and tweezers on their fingers, but oh, I pity the parent of a child that gets a hold of the grilling-lid and ends up with those slivers in them!

Allows dutch oven cooking in the rain
I am a dutch oven cook fanatic. I use them in fishing and hunting camps as well as on a regular basis for home cooking. The limits on dutch ovens is they don't work well in high wind and don't work at all in rain. Wind and rain are regular contitions in my Alaskan hunting and fishing camps. I first found this product at a sporstman show. It is make for use In a volcano cooking "system" which I do not use, but the Lid looked just like what I needed to use my 3 legged Dutch ovens in the rain. I bought one. I immediately found the cover protected the oven from wind and rain but the charcoal would not burn under the tent Lid cover for lack of air. This is because I place the 3 legged Dutch oven on a steel plate or big pizza pan for cooking. The bottom rim of the Lid is sealed around the bottom by resting on the steel/aluminum plate. I simply put a series of 1/2" brass grommets around the sides and top to let some air in. This easy modification worked absolutely perfect (photo attached). Heavy rain, wind, and bitter cold (below zero) present no restrictions for use of the oven. Charcoal lasts about 30-40% longer under the Lid and provides a long steady heat. The lid will only fit over ovens 12" or smaller in diameter and after about 50 or so uses they are pretty much heat damaged to the point they must be replaced. If you use dutch ovens in the camp conditions, this cover (with gromments added) will remove all weather restrictions for cooking.

Most fav camping oven
I purchased 2 for baking purposes in a Dutch oven, cooked over single burner, butane stoves during group camping trips. These babies really do a wonderful job holding in the heat, and allowing the vessel to cook. Then they easily fold up and slip back into the bag with the burners, afterwards. So, I always have a grill, and a oven

MUST HAVE OPTION for Volcano II Grill
Yes, it is fireproof, and also turns the grill into a fantastic smoker.I use it mainly with hardwood for cooking. I let the flames die down a bit, put the flame diffuser ( the middle plate ) on and warm up the top grill and I'm ready to cook. With the lid on the flames almost totally disappear resulting in a meal that is pretty much baked. I still turn whatever I'm grilling over, but I'm not really sure I need to. If you use it with some nice maple, hickory or other hardwood, you can get a great smokey flavor to your chicken, chops or whatever. Meat comes out very moist. You'll love it.

If you need more heat this will do the trick.
I have been trying to bake 10 inch pizzas in my 12 inch dutch oven for several months now. Even with 48 charcoal briquettes, I have been unable to get the exterior temperature of the dutch oven over 320 degrees F. This means that pizzas take up to 15 minutes to cook.A month ago, a local paper carried an article on the Volcano grill and it mentioned this lid, so I ordered it. I just finished a river trip with pizzas for one meal. Using this lid, the exterior temperature was 440 degrees F (same amount charcoal) and the pizzas baked in 10 minutes. By the way, there was a 2 inch gap underneath the lid, which may not be optimum. Too much of a gap and the heating would be less and too little means that the charcoal will not get enough oxygen to burn well.

Poorly made
We replaced our original one with this one. We used it for 3 months only and the handle fell off, the seams are all coming apart and it just is not the same quality as the first one we purchased a few years ago. We also did not fold this one up like we did the original one as we felt folding it caused damage to the first one we had. Disappointed with new one as we loved using this cover to bake our goods!

Completes the Volcano
I've had my Volcano for a good while, but wasn't happy cooking without a lid. Even though this lid/cover is labelled "not for open food", I don't care, just throw this on and get a proper cook for various cuts of meat. And it makes dutch oven cooking work beautifully. I think it should be sold with the Volcano, it shouldn't be an add-on.

Discoloured
It was delivered in a timely manner and performed well in initial use. The lower rating may be self inflicted. When used with the Volcano in wood burning mode, significant discoloration and creosote build up occurred making it very sticky to handle and difficult to unfold again in subsequent use. Maybe just use for charcoal or propane.
