About the Author Walt Kelly was born on August 25, 1913 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He created the characters of Pogo the possum and Albert the alligator in 1941. The first comic series to make the permanent transition to newspapers, Pogo debuted on October 4, 1948. On May 16, 1949, Pogo was picked up for national distribution.
