Product Description Gorgeously filmed along the back roads of rural Mexico, Circo follows the Ponce family's hardscrabble circus as it struggles to stay together despite mounting debt, dwindling audiences, and a simmering family conflict. Tino, the ringmaster, is driven by his dream to lead his parents' circus to success and corrals the energy of his whole family, including his four young children, towards this singular goal. But his wife Ivonne is determined to make a change. Feeling exploited by her in-laws, she longs to return to her kids a childhood lost to laboring in the circus. Through this intricately woven story of a marriage in trouble and of a century-old family tradition that hangs in the balance, Circo opens the viewer to the luminous world of a traveling circus while examining the universal themes of family bonds, filial responsibility, and the weight of cultural inheritance. Review [Four Stars] A gem of a documentary... Crisply shot, emotionally frank, and genuinely moving. --Adam Lee Davies, Time Out LondonRiveting... filled with beautiful images and haunting moments. --The Village Voice

like its characters
This film, like its characters, feels like its standing at a threshold between a world nearly gone and a future uncertain. The filmmakers do a phenomenal job of gaining the trust of the Ponce family and we get as unvarnished a look at their life as anyone could hope for. It's a simple story, told many times before, yet its compelling. It's shot and edited beautifully and Calexico's score complements it perfectly.Great stuff.

Honest, Beautiful and Sad
A great capture of a dying business perhaps. I don't think the people were very happy and the animals certainly were not. A well told story that includes multiple perspectives.

The Circus Life.
Fine doc. about one of the many small circuses throughout the world struggling to keep their way of life viable. Good, talented and hardworking people. Very different existence than mundane town life. Hopefully the small circuses of the world will never strike tents for the last time.

Beautiful and touching. It takes you to the heart of humanity--passion/dissolution.

Hard Life
I never thought about how a small circus could survive. I've been aware of big circuses, the ones with train cars, crews, and sponsors. This circus is different - it's a small family circus travelling around Mexico. I admire the family's hard work and dedication. Most of all, I admire the children and their efforts for the circus - whether that be putting up the tent or lights, carrying equipment, helping train animals, learning contortions, juggling, or other circus acts. The circus life is a different world. Unfortunately, I don't think the kids are getting much of a formal education.
