I liked it
I must be a morbid person because I wanted more gruesome details. But that is not the reason why I give the book three stars, but because I completely disliked Lee, the main character. I disliked her because she was weak and didn’t have the guts to stand up.Other than that, I liked all other characters. I liked the writing style, and I liked how the story was written. I even liked that the shooter didn’t get a name; he was just that: the shooter. So we don’t know his nationality.I also liked the plot and the ending :-)The money I spent on this book was worth it.

A good idea but not well-executed
I wanted to like this because the plot is so timely, but many of the characters seem lopsided and there are plot lines that don’t end up connecting. I thought it was an excellent choice by the author to completely avoid talking about the shooter. I do wish that the ending didn’t feel so rushed.

Thought-provoking
I enjoyed this book. It leads you to examine your own feelings on friendship, religious expression, and when the truth is (or isn't necessary). Nicely written.

Very good book
It was recommended for my 11 year old but I think it would be better for a little older audience.

I’m not much of a reader but when I bought this book I fell IN LOVE!! I read it with just two days and am wanting more! I was expecting more a gruesome story (however morbid that may sound), but it was a good drama yet touched on so many things of mental illness, PTSD, Depression, Anxiety. What almost EVERY day people go through and things that happen to everyone around them and you just never know! 10/10 would recommend

Good read
As a teacher, I saw multiple of my 7th grade students reading this novel so I checked it out. Really good read!

OK
I lost interest about 4 chapters in... don't know why, really. Just... not anything new, really. Same old story retold in a familiar way. We've heard it before.

great read- thought provoking
In light of the spate of high school shootings in the U.S and the ongoing campaign for gun control reform, this book is a touching tribute to both the victims and survivors of such an attack. That's Not What Happened is the story of six survivors of a high school shooting as they face the three year anniversary of the event. Through the eyes of the main protagonist, Lee, we explore how the different characters are coping with the event as she encourages them to write letters to show the alternative narrative to that being publicised through the media. As well as highlighting a very important topic, That's Not What Happened delivers very real characters with very real issues to overcome. It shows the horrors of these events but focuses on the friendships that have developed since then.Being in the head of these survivors was at times heart wrenching and yet I just couldn't put the book down. It was engrossing and felt very authentic to me. What I loved most was that whilst exposing the problems and issues each survivor faced, it also demonstrated hope - not a sickly sweet sort of unbelievable hope - but rather a realistic, step by step glimmer that That's Not What Happened was grounded enough to acknowledge required hard work, support an time. What though, was truly inspirational was the way the victims were portrayed. The fact that Lee saught out ways to offer more than the standard laudatory portraits created by the media. Each victim came alive to me as they were described by their friends with both flaws and redeeming features. This book is highly recommended.

Didn't quite hit the spot
This didn't grab me in the way I expected it too and whilst important issues are certainly raised, I simply didn't connect with the characters or the drama. Looking at some of the comments here, it is clear some of the characters at least are based on the events of Columbine. Yet whilst I felt the psychological aftermath was portrayed well, the whole drama lies in the story of one girl and a cross, a misunderstanding and a fervent congregation. It seemed strangely unimportant amongst the deaths and life altering aspects of school shootings. Some of the eulogies were powerful, but as we only see these characters as fatalities rather than individuals to grow attached to, I have to say I didn't care much. And whilst the author clearly intends to give each survivor a voice through their letters, they end up blurring into one without anything distinctive to separate them. I find books on this topic powerful, but this one doesn't quite hit the spot... I'd have quite liked to see more attention paid to the shooter as well as his name wasn't even given.

Tough read.. But well worth it.
I don't even know where to begin. Its a tough story. Hard hitting. Bare. It's all about a school shooting which unfortunately still happens today and the aftermath. The survivors. The dead. The lie. The truth.I loved the way this story is told and set out. The survivors all stick together to get the truth out there with their own stories and letters about the shooting. All different stories but the same incident. Its about how the survivors are coping years after the shooting. We also get to learn about those lost to the event. Very eye opening. The truth comes out in the end.A well deserved four stars from me. Not an easy read. But well worth the read. Perfect for young adult readers.

Thought Provoking
I have to say, I think that That’s Not What Happened is Kodi Keplinger’s finest work to date.It is a story of truth and untruths. I don’t say lies because that makes the events in the story seem as though they were purposeful and they were not. It is a case of mistaken understanding and not having the heart to upset people that you love.Mostly, though, it is a story of survivor’s guilt. When people talk about books being a page turner; that is exactly what I got with That’s Not What Happened. I didn’t want it to end. I needed to know what happened and I consumed the book in one sitting. It truly is a great story. That’s Not What Happened by Kodi Keplinger is available now.

Decent writing and genuine characters
This book is quite a heavy hitter, dealing with gun violence and PTSD. The characters are well written and the story is seems very heartfelt and intent on putting forward a realistic account of dealing with the aftermath of a shooting and trying in vain to live a normal life. Solid, informative reading
