Charlie Bumpers vs. the Really Nice Gnome was so enjoyable a read that I am going to read it to my fourth graders as they are getting ready for their own school play. Charlie doesn't want to play the Really Nice Gnome in his class's play. He tries everything to get out of it. The secondary theme of the book is Charlie's chore of walking the family dog, which he also tries to get out of. The lessons Charlie learns from these two experiences are important lessons for all children.

Charlie Bumpers is in Mrs. Burke’s fourth grade class. He liked her just fine but she had a lot of strict rules. Every year Mrs. Burke’s class presented a play. There were props costumes and the like. Parents would even come to see. This year’s play was The Sorcerer’s Castle. Charlie wanted to be the evil sorcerer Kragon but instead he was assigned the Really Nice Gnome part. And, on top of that, he had a lot of lines to learn. Charlie attempted to trade with some of his willing classmates but Mrs. Burke wouldn’t allow it.Charlie spoke with his mother who encouraged him to take on this big role, but Charlie was determined to make a change. He and Tommy, a classmate, devised a plan to make the story humorous. The plan was to add some new lines and hopefully get the approval of Mrs. Burke. Will their plan work or will Charlie get stuck being the really boring nice gnome?Author Bill Harley has created a hilarious story built just for boys. This quick easy read has heart and the characters are completely relatable and loveable. Black and white illustrations can be found throughout the pages and help keep the story intriguing. Parents, teachers and caregivers could present this as a read-aloud project.

Another winner!
Our family love, Love, LOVED the first book in the series, and this one is another winner. Lots of fun, but with challenges that I think most kids can relate to. So far, this series is one I look forward to reading as much as my 7 year old son does! We're ready for the next one!
