I ordered this as a new year gift for my husband for his little project. The item itself was good but the instructions were vague at best. He tried to work with it but eventually decided to give up. A very frustrating new year gift…

I really like this scanner. The accuracy and resolution are great in both, auto scan using the turntable or free scan using the tripod. The software is easy to use and has some good scan repair features. It’s been able to scan almost everything I’ve needed to scan.

So far this scanner has scanned objects that I have attempted to scan. I had a shiny metal object that scanned much better after I coated it in baby powder. The image I've uploaded is a hood ornament that I was able to scan in and was cleaned up in meshmixer. The post scan surface had a rough texture but was able to flatten out smooth in meshmixer. I knocked off 1 star for the 1990's out dated appearance software that comes with the unit. The USB connections seem to be finicky. Every time I setup the unit the camera doesn't work and then I move my USB connections around and it works. If I had to choose again I would have gone with the much cheaper EP unit. Super high resolution files are really hard to work with in the computer and if you want to bring files into CAD programs like Fusion360 you will have to really reduce the triangle count.

First, shining 3D requires you to register the software and hardware. That’s normal, however they want you to install team viewer which is questionable. I assume this is for remote assistance which isn’t something I don’t want on my computer . I also figured out you can’t scan metallic, reflective, clear or textured objects very well. In order to 3D print these objects you must first repair the raw mesh file which is time consuming, especially if you don’t have a powerful and expensive computer. In my opinion all these issues defeat the purpose of spending the money on a high end scanner. You can basically do the same thing on a 1k scanner.

Although this scanner worked well for a while, we did have several issues. The software is not where it needs to be to achieve full 3D reconstruction. However, few companies are able to provide much better software. Overall, I would not say we were unhappy with the scanner. However, the scanner abruptly died. Tech has responded well (the item was within warrantee). The replacement unit is due shortly. I intend to update this post if I receive any updates.
