How does this $599 version compare to the $1300 version? In general.

Howdy, I don't have the $1300 version; therefore, can't say. Unless you are big time into audio and have the expensive equipment for it, the Oppo BDP-103D is more then just fine for all your needs.

Will Darbee be effective if TV is connected to Oppo thro a receiver (Oppo HDMI Out > Receiver HDMI > TV)? Or does it have to connect direct to TV?

Connects direct to the tv via the HDMI 1 jack for best results and as the manual recommends. My experience with Darbee is it's not worth the extra money. I can barely tell the difference. I too was intrigued by it and the write up by Oppo but in my opinion it's a waste of money. The difference in the picture whether Blu-ray, HD, or SD is barely discernible. I'm using a Panasonic 1080p 65" tv and Comcast cable provider. If I had it to over I would purchase sans the Darbee feature.

Does the CINAVIA chip apply only to DVD Blu-Ray discs or does it work on files played thru the OPPO via USB thumb drive or on the home network?

Pretty sure I remember from the owners thread at AVS that it does indeed do the Cinavia check on all incoming signals, whether from the internal disc drive, or from network or local storage sourced files. I believe someone was seeing playback issues from his HTPC with ripped movies.

Is this OPPO Darbbe region free, i.e., it plays DVDs from every region of the world?

All Oppo blu-ray players are not region free for DVD or blu-ray out of the box. However, there are modification kits available. Also I believe there is a disc that will make it region free for DVD's. I think it is called the Super Disc.
