A Choice of Weapons

I have known of Gordon Parks through his works for many decades. However I had not known of his words and I am thrilled to have this book in hand in order to learn more about his choice of the camera as a weapon against the Discrimination he faced.

I enjoyed his gift for storytelling. An enjoyable journey through his early years, dealing with the loss of his mother, poverty, and, racism. He finds his passion for photography and his life and fortunes really take off from there.

A choice of weapons chronicles the development of Gordon Parks' decision to use photography to battle poverty, prejudice, and ignorance. His autobiographical account of the many turning points in his life, the choices he made - both good and shameful, could easily be the life many others. Maybe not all grow up in the same circumstances, but certainly all are faced with decisions along the way which lay the foundation for the future. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in history, the arts, music, photography, the civil rights movement, or psychology. Well worth the investment of your time.

Just started reading and couldn’t put it down. I’m glad he chose photography!!! We would have missed his genius.

I liked the writing style of the author- as if he were talking with you, telling you his story. And it is an important story- the author's "weapon" was his camera and the way he used it to better himself. His photography was about bringing his reality into view. Also liked his sense of humor, too.

I bought this for my tech class in 10th grade. It’s a great book, nothing more nothing less.

Wow! Gordan Parks was brilliant!

One of the best biographies I've ever read. Written with a compassionate and loving heart. This books is a must read for all photographers looking to connect deeply with the people the photograph and understand how to bring what's inside to the surface.

A great buy for a photography enthusiast looking for inspiration. Can't wait to read it once my friend is through with it.
