Norton 8501 ADA Compliant Adjustable Spring Sizes 1-6 Institutional Door Closer, Aluminum

This is a really good commercial door closer that works for the home as well. It is well made and has a very good design. The plastic cover is the only negative but it works very well. The other concern is the instructions; installation was easy once you figure out what you want (i.e how you want the unit positioned on the door and frame). I used the conventional method and it works beautifully. Now I'm trying to figure out how to adjust the opening the way I like it (less pressure to open) and close soft (which it does already). It shouldn't be too difficult to figure out as it does have a number of adjustments.

Very nice closer. It's micro adjustments are great. You can get this closer to perform to any need. However installing it can be a frustrating experience. With a full glass panel door my top rail was only 4 1/2" wide. This was too narrow to allow me to install the closer in the preferred way, on the inside. I installed it on the exterior with the arm attached to the jamb head. The installation instructions and drawings are a bit bewildering. Once you've scanned them over about ten times you start to figure it out. If you install such a closer every day it would be a no brainer. But for a one-off installation it turned into a major time burner with high attendant frustration.

This was the exact part I was looking for. The first one failed in less than a year and Himmel's replaced it for me with no hastle. Nice service.

I feel that the included instructions would be cumbersome for the average person because there were so many piddly measurements to make and no template. It did install as expected when measured *EXACTLY* without issue. Works well. Do take the time to measure carefully and adjust the door settings as we found the factory ones on our door weren't ideal.
