Fishbones Charcoal Fire Grate Upgrade for Large Big Green Egg (R)

I think this is a great accessory got the BGE. My grill heats up much faster and the airflow is much better. No problems with ash clogging like you have with the factory BGE charcoal grate. Highly recommended.

Worst idea yet from a third party retrofit to a large green egg particularly if you use the natural wood charcoal as recommended.There’s a reason Green Eggs come with a charcoal grate with 1/2” holes. Natural charcoal by its nature is of widely varying sizes. But one constant is pieces crack and slough off as it burns. The holes in the grate that comes with the green egg keeps all but the smallest pieces above the grate allowing for proper air flow and constant heat.This poorly thought out design allows much bigger pieces to fall through to the bottom of the fire chamber below the grate.One drawback is it increases the restriction of airflow.The worst part is the fact hot large pieces fall through and super heat the bottom floor of the Green Egg.I’ve had my Green Egg for over 8 years and frequently run it up to 700+ degrees to sear steaks. Not once have experienced an issue.First time with this grate and it caught my wooden table on fire below the Green Egg despite having it set up on the ceramic spacers that came with the Green Egg to set on in such situations.My recommendation is not to use this grate but if you do so, only do it if the stand you use is metal or some other nonflammable material.

Fires get ready quicker, but way more ash to dump out of egg, it need additional cross bars to close some of this gap.

Great addition to our Big Green Egg (BGE). This grate lets more air thru to get the charcoal burning quickly and on a long cook it doesn't get clogged by small chunks of charcoal and ash like the holes in the original cast iron grate. Another great feature is preparing partially used charcoal for a new cook. Ashes and small bits of charcoal fall right through this grill. Just moving the used charcoal to one side for lighting gets most of the ashes into the ash clean out for removal, all without clogging the charcoal support grate.The installation was easy as loading charcoal in your BGE, Just remove the old grate and drop in the new. I do recommend installing the bars in the direction you rake up used coals for relighting. This way the charcoal chunks slide along the bars instead of across.

Fits just perfect in my large Vision Kamado grill from Home Depot... Excellent product... Far better than the grate that came with the grill- allows enough air to reach high temps quickly, and also to control temperature better even low. First cook was a 10 hour smoke at 250 degrees...very little tweaking required by me throughout the cook- highly recommend!!

The purpose of the product is GREAT. The airflow increases using it. The quality is good but I feel is something you can do it yourself if you have some welding knowledge. Doesn't seem like a product made on a production line, but this doesn't affect the result at all. So I feel this is something to have. I used it with a Large Big Green Egg and it fits perfect.

This is an excellent upgrade for your Large and Mini Max Big Green Eggs! Yes - the fire grate is the same size on those two and this will fit either/or.The quality is top notch (although two of the bars were slightly bent - not a big deal as it won't ever be seen) and it allows far more, and consistent, air flow than the standard fire grate. The standard grate gets plugged up with pieces of charcoal and ash - the majority of which falls right through this. I will be purchasing a second so both of my BGE's fill benefit from upgraded fire grate. Thanks Fishbones and Smokeware!!
