An author that’s lost his kicking power
I loved his early novels. But he lost it in the trilogy and his two subsequent novels. Don’t bother to read his newer work.

Robert Goddard never disappoints.
Recreational read and keep with it as the last three quarters of the book is great, Robert Goddard never disappoints.

One False Move
At the beginning of this book the main character says something like her colleague didn't know what he was getting them into. After reading the rest of the book, I'd say that was pretty accurate if not an understatement. We start off with a relatively simple task for Nicole. To track down a game player and persuade them to work for her games company Venstrom. Both these things initially go well but there is one small sticking point. Joe, the game player already has a job and his current employer isn't about to let him go without a fight; and he plays dirty. Things soon spiral further as it seems that Venstrom isn't the only one interested in Joe and his talents and what follows is a fast action, scary, roller coaster thrill of a ride that eventually has Nicole on the run fearing for her life.Well... firstly I have to say that I really wasn't expecting to go where we went in this book and I am not talking geographically. Don't worry, I'm not going to spoil anything in this review but I will say that it did remind me of quite a few of the author's earlier books with the path it took. I'd love to qualify this statement and also explain exactly why I loved this book but I really want everyone to get the same shocking tingle of excitement I got when certain things came out.As with all the books I have read by this author plotting was extremely tight and very well executed, especially important given the direction we took. Characterisation was also good. We had a veritable mix of good and bad and, also as usual from the author, those who were somewhere in between. Again I'm reluctant to go into detail but I will just say that there were some juicy secrets and lies to be found along with a dollop of duplicitous behaviour. I especially loved it when help came from a very unlikely source... Pacing was perfect and fitted with the narrative well. All in all, a good addition to an already impressive back catalogue, most of which I have already read. Hopefully I will be able to fill in more gaps whilst I wait for the next new offering. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Promises much, delivers little..
Once again, as with 2018's 'Panic Room' this new novel ( another contemporary thriller by a writer who is at his best when writing historical fiction), started so well... writing in first person with a female protagonist, an engaging character called Nicole Nevinson, the reader is quickly drawn into the story and the Falmouth setting, and the first 100 pages zip by. The story develops nicely as does the tension between the ( at this stage) small cast of characters....Then it grinds to a halt with the second part being a long back story about cold war espionage which becomes central to the tale, but is quite frankly, uninteresting.Apart from good characterisation ( in particular the nerdy character called Martinek), the story becomes a run around London and the Cotswolds devoid of tension and the major plot twists that this author once exelled at.Robert Goddard has written 25 books better than this and a couple that are poorer but this one I feel sure will go down as his least interesting and least memerable.

Not worth reading
With a ridiculous plot, two dimensional characters and an unbelievable denouement, the latest novel from Robert Goddard doesn't really deserve two stars. Unfortunately, One False Move is another disappointment after Panic Room, which was equally daft. Goddard writes easily and his novels are always pacy, which makes reading even a poor novel relatively painless. But don't be fooled into thinking you are reading the Goddard of old. None of the characters in this latest novel is credible and their direct speech is often cringingly bad. OFM is just about acceptable reading for a long train or plane journey, or in other situations when you might not be able to muster full concentration, but it is a novel that you will happily consign to the jumble sale when you get home.

So disappointing
i am a big fan and really like books like fault line his last great book. These are are intriguing mysteries with great plots and locations full of twists and turnsBut the move to thrllers in my view has been a big mistake and making the lead female really did not work.please please please go back to what you are best at before you go "Beyond Recall"

Tension!
I have always loved Robert Goddard thrillers (historical or otherwise) so pre-ordered this immediately. I was gripped as soon as I started reading.Nicole is not your usual kind of heroine, sent to track down a Go game-playing genius to engage his services for her employer. As with all RG's novels, nothing is ever straightforward! The tension soon builds up with the most innocuous, helpful of characters turning into surprise villains. This is a great thrilling ride as always, with several unexpected turns along the way.I can't say much else without spoiling it for other readers. Suffice it to say, that Robert Goddard's wonderful descriptive powers take you to the end, always leaving the reader wanting more.P.S. You don't need to understand how to play 'Go' to enjoy this book!

Disappointing
I am afraid to say that this another disappointing novel by the previously brilliant Robert Goddard. It was predictable all the way through, which his earlier novels weren't. I am not against the change of formular for his novel to present day, the story just wasn't what it could have been. The end was as if he just couldn't be bothered to finish it properly. Please revert back to the "old" Robert Goddard!
