Absolutely wonderful -- but not for everyone.
What a wonderful book. It is a simple, playful, allegorical story about the phases of life, and aging. There is very little text per page. And the pictures are large and expressive. It is comical, adorable, and exceptionally wise---but not for everyone. It is a wise and classy tale. Because it touches on a universal but difficult subject (namely, aging), it is not for everyone. In my opinion, it is an instant classic. But you want to read it first before giving it as a gift.

Completely delightful, in a somewhat Kafka-esque sort of way. Anyone with children will immediately relate. I have bought it for many friends with new babies. My 2-year-old son also really likes it, though in some ways it seems more for parents than for children.

Gadzooks!
Charming, zany, crazy, sensible, understanding, funny, scary. Actually, it's a kid's book for adults. It's about parental reactions to raising a child and man-oh-man is it ever clever! And the illustrations are scintillating and superb, and just right! Buy it.

All parents need to read this!
This is one of the best children's books there is. As much fun for parents as it is for kids and so true. You can tell I am pleased by the way I clatter my beak!

Good for parents and teenagers too !
I read this book to my 12 and 15 year olds following a challenging week with my older teenager. It was a good and light hearted read and received a positive response. It was a good 'opener ' to a conversation about emotions and feelings during these difficult times and helped us all ( adults and kids) to appreciate and accept issues faced by both kids and parents alike. Several weeks on and we still refer to the animals behaviour in the book to the different stages of child development and how a teenager can experience all stages in one weekend! ! I highly recommend but choose your moment as it is really aimed for young kids .

This is such a funny book. Children and grownups love it. I always buy it for new babies, it gives their parents a warning of what is to come

A must for all parents and grandparents.
I bought this after reading other recommendations by reviewers. I usually enjoy Quentin Blake books so thought it was worth trying without seeing it or reading it. I was not disappointed!! What a great read! My grandchildren were insistent that neither I nor my husband, looked or behaved like the last creatures but we found it very funny and loved sharing it.

massive quentin blake fans
My 21mo son loves mr magnolia and all join in so I bought this as an early xmas present. I love it, its a lovely book about raising children and then how they view parents, I'm going to buy more for my new parent friends. It doesn't have the lovely toddler friendly rhyming patterns of some of blake's other books so my son hasn't fallen in love with it yet but I think this will be a good one for older kids so we will get our money's worth at some point.
