Spiritual Healing

Cult classic
A cult classic.Mine came with a bit of faded colors in the package. The CD was not pressed too long ago, which means the faded colors are not from old age, but from a factory printing error, but is barely noticeable. I noticed after comparing to a copy a boyfriend got.In spite of that, the package and booklet look amazing, they were completely readable, the CD did not give me any issues playing it on my PC or Discman. You should definitively get this is you love Death or want to get into them.

Greatest death metal album ever released
While my assertion that this is the top death metal album of all time will certainly draw some negative response, I remember making that statement back in 1990 when "Spiritual Healing" was first released.1990 was a high mark for death metal, although it remained an underground sensation. Chuck Schuldiner, Terry Butler and Bill Andrews were at their best on this release and the addition of James Murphy on guitar helped push the album over the top. All eight songs are strong. There is no filler on this album. While future Death releases drew more praise from the metal press (including the now defunct Metal Maniacs magazine), it was this release, on which the song writing duties were shared, that cemented Death as the top band in the field. With grunge arriving and changing the face of all types of metal (from death to hair), 1990 saw the release of several great albums (including Obituary's "Cause of Death") but it was "Spiritual Healing" was remains the top in its field, more than two decades later. This re-issue is long overdue. The comments from Butler and Murphy add to it as do previously unprinted band photos. The liner notes from Beth Schuldiner (Chuck's sister) gives the fans an insight on "correcting a wrong" regarding the production credits. I only wish some comments from Andrews had been included. The former Death drummer has been out of the scene since the end of Massacre in the early 90s.This is a great addition to any death metal fan's catalog. I still have the original cassette I bought of the release along with three versions of the CD. This release, however, is the definitive offering for the death metal's top release.Death metal hit its peak in 1990 as did the band Death. The addition of James Murphy made it the band's best lineup and this release proves it. All eight tracks are solid and any could have been the first one on the album. The music and performances are too solid not to be a five star ratings. Still, I wish Bill Andrews had somehow been included.

Death's most under rated album
Chuck couldn't have written a bad song even if he tried. This album doesn't receive as much praise as Leprosy but I'd say it is easily as good. Chuck was the father of death metal, and he perfected it at the same time.

Essential Death Metal
This album, along with Death's first two albums, served as my introduction to death metal. Out of those three, Spiritual Healing is definatly my favorite. This album marks Death's first foray into more progressive teritory, which would be further explored on future albums. The album is more progressive, not only musically, but also lyrically. Chuck Schuldiner ditches the cliched b-movie horror lyrics, and replaces them with, get this, actually relevant social comentary. Chuck writes about topics such as abortion, the death penalty, cloning, violence, and religion. The best part about this is that Chuck actually makes some good points. The only lyrical slip up for me is "Living Monstrosity" which just might have some of the most unintentionally hilarious lyrics i've ever heard. Musically, the album features better production, better musicianship (THE SOLOS! THE SOLOS!), and better thought out arrangements. Some of my favorite tracks are "Spiritual Healing", "Low Life", "Killing Spree", and , the first Death song I ever heard, "Within The Mind". This is an amazing album that, along with Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy, serves as an awesome intro to death metal.

AMAZING AND EXTREMELY UNDERRATED!!!!
This album is definately one of Death's best, it is their 3rd best in my opinion. There is nothing bad about this album, it has good production, great musicians, amazing guitar solos and amazing riffs and drum beats. There is only one song that isnt that great, and that is Within The Mind, i dont really care for that song, but dont let me ruin it for you. All other songs are AMAZING, James Murphy is Death's best guitarist (other than Chuck). The Highlights on this album are Living Monstosity, Altering the Future, Genetic Reconstruction, Killing Spree, and the Title Track. But all songs are good on this album, you must buy this if you are a metal fan, not Death metal fan, but a metal fan. if the vocals on the first 2 albums are a little much for you and you want more complex guitar work (the first 2 albums were already pretty complex) then buy this album, you will not be disapointed, and when you get this album in the mail from amazon, when you get the package and open it, you will feel like a little kid at christmas because it is so amazing.....or at least thats how i felt, but time to wrap it up. So finally, this is an amazing and underrated album, and i think you should buy it in a heart beat. Also another reason to buy it is because it is not in print anymore so when you come across this album buy it before its to late.

Not as it seems
Would’ve been 5* if I received what is being advertised. In the description of the product it says there are 2 disks with extra content. However I received 1 disk with no extra content. The album itself is a masterpiece but I’m a bit annoyed that I didn’t get what I thought I was getting.

The perfect voice of Death Metal
This whole album is a point at which all death metal should look up to. Immensely riff driven music, with perhaps my favourite vocal performance from chuck (which is never the same for two albums). The guitar solo in "Altering the Future" is exactly what a guitar solo should do, with every note resonating perfectly without taking away from the brutality. The CD comes in a double CD holding jewel case, with an additional thin card sleeve which is textured in 3D which is a nice touch - looks great

Death is the best
Great album like all the others, love all Death albums, can listening to it over and over and of course the art cover is awesome.Just from listening to Chuck's voice it chill my bones and make me want to sing the lyrics with him,and of course the instruments are awesome, what makes the unique sound.Top songs are: 'Living Monstrosity', 'Defensive Personalities', 'Altering the Future', 'Spiritual Healing' but really all the tracks are great.Highly recommended to all death and thrash metal fans and everyone who appreciate good music.

This is another must have album by Death
This album became an outstanding one for many people as i've gone through all the articles and reviews about it. Feels to me they just struggle to understand it. Chuck had the great musicians yet again. I cannot help it but i have to mention James Murphy who replaced Rick Rozz on guitars and let me say James is much more gifted than Rick. This is actually one of the first three albums that are also often called brutal albums by Death. So this is the last one from the brutal era and in my opinion people call it outstanding 'cause Chuck experimented more with the lyrics. He made a right decision to push it all forward instead of writing the lyrics based on low budget horror films etc. that was done by the other bands. That is what made him and all the band's music outstanding! I just love the sound of the album. guitar work is pretty fast and precise, solos are great and sound pretty hard to play. Both Chuck and James use tremolo picking to play the solos. For those who don't know let me explain what tremolo means- it's using the technique of picking the strings with extremely fast intensity. So they both use tremolo picking to play the solos instead of pull-offs and hammer-ons which people must have got bored of by the time. This album is a "milestone" in Death's sound, this album actually defined the sound of the band that was always singlehandedly led by Chuck and nobody else but him as a main lyricist and genius songwriter. That is why this album appears to be a breakpoint and the biggest step forward in defining the sound. Once you play it you will want to play it over and over again. The song compositions are very catchy. Can't help it but i need to mention Living monstrosity as an example of Chuck growing musicianship and making reality to be a part of lyrics where living monstrosity is actually a child that was born to a mum addicted to cocaine. What you might find a bit disappointing is the sound of drums but don't get confused by the other reviews drums might sound monotonous but actually they match the music. If you are a fan of proper and true death metal this is another essential one to your collection. So do not hesitate and go for it- get it!!! Support true death metal!

Death comes into it's own.
This album is by far my favorite album by Death. It may not be technically it's best but for me the songs have such a smooth groove underlying throughout that just makes it memorable. Cheers Chuck you are missed.

Underrated gem
This is my first death album and I've heard that they sold out on this album......well I sure wanna hear them in full force because this a truly heavy album. Very technical but still has that old school death metal raw sound and feel. I'm quite tough for music and I would give this 4 and a half stars. Also amazing art by Ed repka and deep amazing lyrics. Almost perfect album. Standout tracks are altering the future, low life and the title track.

Klassiker
Nachdem meine alte CD den Geist aufgegeben hatte mußte eine Neue her. Was soll man sagen ? Meiner Meinung nach das beste Death Album. Ob man das remastered hört... keine Ahnung. Neue Produktionen sind immer noch druckvoller im Bassbereich.
