So, um, it's torture not having #3 available yet!!
Here I am again, reviewing yet another of Hocking's ingenious books. I bought this one on a Sunday morning. Despite it being over 6000 Kindle locations long, I was finished by Sunday night.Newsflash: we have another fascinating winner in Hocking's arsenal of paranormal fiction.Torn is book two in Hocking's Trylle series, and I will say first of all that those of you who are like me and have the patience of a gnat when it comes to reading a series of books back to back, be advised that book three in this series has not yet been released. So if you can't stand waiting, be advised, you're going to have to wait anyway. Personally, the waiting is driving me nuts!In book one (Switched), we learn about Wendy, her miserable life and the fact that she is a troll princess next in line for the throne. We meet all sorts of interesting trolls, are introduced to troll society, and fall madly in love with the magnificent but mysterious Finn and his buddies. We learn that Wendy is traumatized, yet spoiled, and quite unprepared for her life as troll royalty. And we wonder - how in the world will Wendy be able to pull this off? She's a hopeless romantic clutz in a role that demands perfection and composure!Book two (Torn) continues the adventure as we follow Wendy, the troll princess, as she continues to discover who she is, what her responsibilities are, and we jump on a roller coaster of all sorts of interesting conflict, drama, adventure and romance. Chaos is afoot as Wendy also discovers just who the enemy trolls are and why they refuse to cease stalking her. But most importantly, we see growth...growth in her Queen Mother, her betrothed, her foster family members, and most importantly, in Wendy as she learns her roll and further begins to understand the responsibilities that have been placed on her young shoulders.Hocking's characterization is magnificent. Especially in this book. We learn a ton about the characters and discover their deeply hidden motivations. I found myself laughing out loud at Duncan, the bumbling nerdy "guard" that has no idea what he is doing but does a darn good job of doing nothing. He is especially adorable in the scenes where he volunteers to be "practice" for Wendy's persuasion skills and subsequently realizes that he can't stand, sit, or otherwise do anything until she grants him permission to do so first. It's an adorable little sequence to watch him try to sit down only to realize he can't!I did read Amanda's My Blood Approves series, and honestly, I like this series better. I'm not sure why, as they are both great series in their own right, but I think it is that perhaps I've seen too much vampire and so little troll. The trolls are fresh and fun and adorable! But I will say that the Trylle series and it's beautifully developed characters just seem to jump off the page and into my imagination.Overall, I give Torn five stars, one more star that I gave the Switched book. Despite the fact that there are a few typos in the book (I counted 18, actually), Hocking does a fabulous job reaching readers with plot development and characterizations. I cared about these characters that were introduced in Switched but further developed in Torn. I read about them in Switched, but I fell in love with them in Torn. Torn reached me emotionally as a reader.I definately recommend this book to all reader who like the typical YA fantasy and paranormal genre. Adults, especially those that work with or live with teenagers, this one is a winner for you too. Hocking goes a long way toward bridging the gap between teen angst and adult responsibility - this one just may give you insight into issues and emotions that plague your teenager!Dangit, Hocking...hurry up and release book number three. You're killing me here!!

Torn Book 2... better than the first!
As this second installment of the Trylle Novels is rereleased on February 28th, I thought I'd reread and review this book to encourage some people to pick it up. This series by Amanda Hocking is creative, wonderful and hard to put down.In Torn, book two, we again follow Wendy, the changeling and Trylle princess, on her adventures. This time though, Wendy gets herself and her friends in a little bit of a predicament. After fleeing the Trylle compound with her biological brother Rhys, she returns to her old home to see her adoptive family. Once there, she and her family members are captured by a different breed of troll and taken to a different compound, far away from their Minnesota home. Once there, Wendy begins to find out a lot more about herself and the past that Elora has lead her to believe was the truth. Without giving too much away, this book introduces us to a sort of love triangle? Square? Trapezoid? I'm not exactly sure which shape it creates but Wendy has to sort through some serious feelings as she has three different boys vying for her affections. As if that wasn't enough, she must also make the choice between her duty and her own free will.I loved Torn even more than I loved the first book, Switched. In this story, we are further immersed in the Trylle society and learn more about their customs and their royalty. We also find out a lot about Elora's past and Wendy's true parentage. Hocking leads her readers down an inventive and action packed trail as she throws twists and turns at us from every direction. We see Wendy grow up a bit in this book as well. She begins to realize what it means to be the princess and how sometimes, one has obligations that sometimes make free will impossible. She really struggles with this throughout the book after she ran away and saw what the effects of her behavior had on her people. This is one of my favorite things about Wendy, she learns from her mistakes and she matures before our eyes. It's great to see her grow up and grow into the role of a future leader. It's also interesting to see her learn how to trust. It's hard for her after finding out that she was a changeling and that her whole life was basically a lie. She struggles to make sense of her patch work family and to find a place in both worlds that try and claim her.Again, this was a very well written book that I could hardly put down. The characters are well thought out and the plot and setting are very detailed and descriptive without being too heavy. It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Hocking's work and this book doesn't disappoint. If you haven't given these books a try, definitely pick them up because they are very much worth the read. You'll never be able to turn the pages fast enough!** Ascend, the final installment of the Trylle Novels will be rereleased on April 24th, 2012!8 out of 10review brought to you by Allison from Abibliophobic ([...])
