how tall is the tab/leg that would guide the door if I cut a groove in the bottom of my door?

I don't recall how high the tab extended, although I would guess no more than 1". Be sure to account for the space at the bottom when cut the groove.

Does this work on carpet?

Sorry, ours are on a ceramic tile floor, never tried it on carpet.
