Does the time lapse function work? Can i install the software in windows 10? How are the files encoded?

yes it has a timer function for both photo and video. I intstalled the software on my computer using Windows 10, worked great.

Is there any way to adjust the magnification other than physically maneuvering the microscope?

I don't think one can adjust the magnification at all (even by manual adjustment). There's a single optical element, so the only adjustable parameters are position and course/fine focus, which involve manually moving the base or the scope.

Illumination. Would it be possible to bottom light samples with this? Is the focal plan flexible enough to allow a lighted stage to be slid below?

Not sure, but microscopes do that so perhaps. I added a ring light to improve illumination from above. I may try your idea. Otherwise I've gotten better photos and videos.
