a continued quality on-to The King
am a reggæ fan since I first heard a bit on Fidel's "Cuban" radio. It was allowed to play in the totally controlled radio for only a few months: then?: Forbidden: Castro-cuban mercenaries working for the Soviet U were invading a successful Ethiopia and deposing King Hailé Selassié I). But it's a taste of the heart - you don't just get rid of the taste of music dedicated to God - as true reggæ is music" on-to The King". That said - I have seen Joseph Hill's Culture I think (ahém) twice. As a duo. Got the Joe Gibbs beautiful four album set - and the separate album with dub poets: The origins are there: All brilliant. Next I jumped at this Virgin set. Don't let the Virgin label give you any strange ideas: These are 100% JAHmaican - just as brilliant. Culture went from the master Joe Gibbs to the mistress Mrs. Pottinger. I think a lot of the Same master musicians are here. Very honest sound - and with The King up front. Four albums are in this two CD set: Including one never released: Black Rose. Now we need please some live concerts.Young people: If you perchance heard and liked a Culture song, be advised: If you listen five or six consecutive times to that One Song you will fall in love with it - and these are just like that. No fireworks - just super heart. Plus tremendous songs;Fireworks are on the forgotten live tapes. Joseph Hill and his friends are Lions.Ps the nee hommage album is great. Mr Hill's son Kenyata (pronounce "keñata") will simply shock old timers. Just like little Julian Marley would make elderly Jamaican ladies swoon - when Julian was maybe 9 yrs old. 😊

What Stuart Jefferson said - Get this!
At the current price point of $13.99 this is a strong "must buy" for anyone that loves, or thinks they may even like, Culture. I guess if you don't have any Culture in your music library and you're a reggae fan - or just starting to explore the genre as a whole - this collection is a great way to introduce yourself to this phenomenal group led by Joseph Hill. The inclusion of the rare LP "Black Rose" is worth the price of admission alone. If I could describe Culture to someone who's never heard them, I couldn't help but reference the tough, no compromising lyrical stance of Peter Tosh, the Jamaican folk influence of Joe Higgs, and the harmonies on early Burning Spear. However, whereas I'd say Burning Spear had a more meditative approach to the music, Culture remains matter-of-fact. The lyrics do not beat around the bush. Hill, Albert Walker and Roy Dayes never mince words as they address oppression and injustice, seeking to inspire their listeners. Isolate these lyrics and you've got folk songs to rival any others ever written. They even cover Woody Guthrie's "This Train" on Cumbolo. The LPs included on this CD 4-pack include Culture's Harder than the Rest, Cumbolo, International Herb and Black Rose. All of these are Sonia Pottinger productions, recorded at Jamaica's Treasure Isle Studios with all-star Jamaican session musicians. The engineering, mixing and playing are all top-notch and professional. I can't recommend this set enough.*One caveat - my order came direct from Amazon and was shipped in a simple padded envelope that was too big for the CD. As a result, the jewel case was damaged (CDs were fine). I've let them know about this problem and hopefully it will be rectified for other purchasers.

CULTURE IS ONE OF THE BEST HARMONY GROUPS IN ALL OF JAMAICAN MUSIC.
Let's get a couple of things straight. Joseph Hill should be as well known and as popular as Bob Marley. And like Marley, Hill and the music of Culture will still be listened to years from now. And I don't say this as just a fan of Culture--the music along with Hill's message is just that good and as important when it was recorded as in the present. The trio had some of the very best harmonies in Jamaican music. While Jamaican music changed and morphed into different styles (including Dancehall and music termed "slackness" with it's sexual themes), the roots style music of Culture and Hill's dedication to peace and unity never wavered. From their albums "Two Sevens Clash", "Africa Stand Alone", Harder Than The Rest", to the (until now) unissued album "Black Rose", Hill stayed true to his roots style message. The sound is very good--clean and open. The 10 page booklet has a good overview of Culture's music and some period photos, including one with the trio standing next to some tall funny looking plants. Hmmm. Also well worth checking out is "Culture At Joe Gibbs" (a 4 CD set), "Natty Dread Taking Over" (a 2 CD overview including the "Africa Stand Alone album), and the expanded "Two Sevens Clash" album.
