Sweet Barebones PC in a Pint-Sized Package
This is an awesome little barebones pc! It looks just like an external dvd/bluray drive (tho it's actually smaller than one). Assembly was a breeze and. tho I only skimmed the instructions, they looked more than adequate. I used a Core i7-4970S processor, two 8GB sticks of not-particularly-special Crucial DDR3-1600 RAM, a 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD & a 250 GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD and everything has been running perfectly (and quietly). Note that I didn't use the provided heatsink compound, which I expect is low-performance generic gray mud; I used Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra instead. It's overkill for a system like this, but I've always had good results with it and had some on-hand. Also, because I can't leave well enough alone, I used a dremel to completely cut away the two fan grills on the top of the case and stuck a magnetic 140mm DEMCifilter ( DEMCiflex 140mm Magnetic Fan Dust Filter - Black ) to the top to cover the holes and provide protection from dust and creature fur. If you don't get a DEMCifilter, get SOME kind of filter to put on top of the case. Otherwise, the fans will pull in dust and anything else floating around in the air and the cooling performance will ultimately degrade, resulting in the fans needing to run at higher (louder) speeds in order to adequately cool the system. You may have noticed that I have two drives installed... The specs and documentation fail to mention that there's a second, fully functional, SATA port on the tiny motherboard. To install the second drive, I had to get an additional 6" right-angle SATA cable ( StarTech.com 6 Inch SATA to Right Angle SATA Serial ATA Cable (SATA6RA1) ) AND a short SATA power splitter ( StarTech.com PYO2SATA 6in SATA Power Y Splitter Cable Adapter - M/F ). I also had to tape the second drive to the top of the first drive, since there are no holes in the hard drive bracket for installing a second drive, despite the fact that a second one fits in there perfectly. It was a bit of a chore to get the cables routed so that I could reassemble the PC without having to squish anything (this is probably why they don't mention the second port)... but patience does pay off! The second drive was recognized by the computer AND windows immediately on the next boot. Overall, I'm quite pleased with this purchase. With the components that I installed, this baby performs really well and it's near silent. The fans have not ramped up very often from "normal" use and when they have, it's been only for brief moments and they weren't particularly loud. However, if you run some demanding apps and really push the processor, the fans WILL ramp up to full speed, at which point they're little screamers. My normal computer use (Web, 1080p videos, Excel, Word, Photoshop, Dreamweaver) rarely pushes the fans above 1600 rpm, which is VERY quiet. Check my screenshots of the system specs, idle temps, and the two SSD's running on the Shuttle.

Great concept but poor quality control
Item was dead on arrival. First thought it was the CPU and ordered another CPU. But, still the same. Then, thought it was the memory. Unfortunately, it was past the Amazon 30 day return before I figured out that it was neither the CPU or the memory. Now have to deal with the manufacturer, who is in Taiwan, and difficult to contact. Would not recommend. Instead - Zotac seems to be a better way to go.

I love this product
I love this product. Installed an i7-4790k on top of it, with 16G memory and a 500GB Samsung SSD drive, with Windows 10 home it take only 4 seconds to start. The manual is straight forward, with the help of the manual could install CPU, memory and hard drive without any issue.

Small, Quiet but Powerful
I had built several Shuttle cubes prior to the DS87. This build has an EVO 850 mSata card partitioned for Windows and data, Kingston 240 SSD data drive, 16 gigs RAM (manufacturer and model recommended by Amazon), and i5 4690s. The specs for compatible processors must be adhered to. I gave 4 stars, as I had trouble getting video, the mSata and one of the ram chips to work. I reached out to Shuttle but did not get a response. I rolled up my sleeves and tried different workarounds finally getting it all to work after several days. Overall, I am very pleased with the performance and silence of this machine. Would still recommend.

but I do like the dual NICs
Not a big fan of the CPU and case cooling setup, but I do like the dual NICs. I used these to create pfSense firewall/routers for my customers and they work great for that.

Set mine up just like Scott Allyn - although without the filter
Set mine up just like Scott Allyn - although without the filter. Installed Window 10, 64 bit and updated all drivers. Mouse and keyboard would freeze often - thought it was a Windows problem. However, I had forgotten to check the Shuttle BIOS and it was still v1.0, not the current 1.2. After flashing, no freezing of the mouse and keyboard. This is a little pint sized beast!

Buyer Beware
I bought three of these boxes for an ESXi lab. All three worked fine after I built them with all the parts I ordered. I used them for a couple of labs and then powered them off and didn't use them for a month. Now when I powered them on again to continue with other labs they don't post at all. Blue light comes on but no video on all three. If you're going to buy one of these I suggest you use it daily and hope if it does break that it happens before the 30 day warranty expires with Amazon.
