This is a well built tool.
This fork is light but strong. The parts fit well and went together quickly, in about 10 minutes. The soil I have is mostly clay that hasn't been disturbed since it was deposited....about 100 million years ago. Having said that, I was able to stand on the fork, rock side-to-side and sink the tines fully into the soil. As I pulled back on the fork, the soil came up in 8" to 10" deep blocks. I used the fork to breakup the blocks of soil and will run a tiller through as I add a bunch of compost. Next year, I expect the fork to bury itself with very little effort. The fork did a great job and showed no signs of strain from the brick-like soil in my field.

The best soil turning tool ever !
My original rating was low based on the fact that the instructions were not quite up to par and my package was missing a screw. The company send me the missing little item and I had a chance to try it out. I am fairly short and small but was able to turn over very hard compacted soil within 1 hour. No wonder my plants didn't grow well. the soil under the top 4" of soil was hard as a rock.My only suggestion would be to make this fork less wide for the little people, like me, with shorter arm span. However, this is the tool to have in your arsenal of garden tools.

A solid performer!
I first saw a broadfork in action 20 years or more ago when Eliot Coleman was championing them. You can find a lot of what I call "unreasonable facsimiles" online and in some brick and mortar stores - poorly made things that I am reluctant to label as "tools". Seldom when you see a "deal" like these things is it really a deal - typically you are just throwing away money. The primary use for a broadfork is to open up the soil without tilling it or turning it over. It is popular in the "no-till" community to use a broadfork to help prep a garden bed and I intend to use my broadfork for this purpose. However, today's specific use of my broadfork was to unearth a massive amount of dock plants from my front pasture. We rotate horse, donkey and goat through a couple of our pastures but the front one is really only fences for the horse and donkey and so only the plants that are eaten by them are trimmed back - weeds like dock are not something they'll eat and so they tend to thrive in this field. It has rained for 3 straight days and the pasture was very water-logged... today was overcast but otherwise dry and gave me very agreeable conditions to put the broadfork to work.I run all seven tines in the broadfork - you could take some out but I see no reason for me to do that at present. Seven hours later I had cleared an uncountable number of dock plants - with long taproots, some as long as 18 inches - from the pasture. The broadfork performed admirably. Previously I had used a short garden fork - the kind with the flat tines - and it was better than some tools but the broadfork easily provides more leverage and stability when driving the tines into the ground. The manufacturer states in the literature that this isn't for breaking up clods of dirt. I think it would be a mistake to use it for that purpose. I also don't think it would be very effective to use it that way. It worked well in soft(ish), fertile pasture soil that has 15 years of manure spread atop it. No doubt it will do a fantastic job prepping garden beds too.It is all metal with strong tines and well-proportioned handles. It is painted but will need to be cleaned off to keep it in tip-top shape for years to come. The handles attach using round lock pins - you can pick up a couple of spares for probably $1 each at a hardware store or certainly online. I'd recommend that in case you lose one of these while using it.I like that it was made in Montana too, mostly because I think it is a quality-made tool rather than some cheap imported junk.

Made in USA and lifetime-guarantee. Adjustable handles to boot!
I bought this a few years ago, and after a lot of use breaking up the clay beneath our converted pasture, two of the welded seams broke. We called the company and got a call from the actual owner/creator of the tool, who promptly replaced it, no questions asked. Actually, he asked questions, but the right kind, not the hassling kind. He was great. He said that they saw the problem in a few of the older models but have since rectified the issue. Anyway, we really love this broadfork. The adjustable handles make it easy to use good body mechanics - straight wrists are important if you've got wrist injuries or want to avoid them. It digs deep, is super sturdy, and holds up well. Made in the USA and lifetime-guaranteed? You can't beat that! I would buy it again if I needed another, but since it's guaranteed, I probably never will!

This is a "must have" garden tool
This tool is a "must have" for everyone that loves to garden! This soil conditioner is built like a tank and will be around to pass down to my children. Strong but light weight and very versatile. Individual digging spikes may be easily removed to form a custom soil tool. The handles are super strong and can be adjusted to four different settings to meet my individual taste. Thanks Garden Growers Supply for a top quality tool at a fair price. Delivery was on time and well packaged. Looking forward to a fun summer gardening with this wonderful soil conditioner and harvesting tool.
