Love it and you can cook anything in it
I love this thing. We made pizza, sandwiches and pies. We did season it per inctructions prior to use and oiled with vegetable oil after each use. Never had any food stick. I was able to heat and wipe clean after cooking. It is too heavy for a child to hold over fire/coals. I layed it on a grate or rock and just turned periodically. The versatility on what u can cook in here is endless. I'm sire u could make eggs and omletes as well is you season it. I didnt get a chance to try it. The only tjing I wish is that I had bought 5 so that I could cook everyones food at once because depending on what ur cookking it takes 5-9 minutes. It has wood handles that do not get hot. Where the box joins the pole does feel as if it could break if held out for long periods but it didnt break and we used it for three days for 5 people. Cast iron material seems like good quality but it has to be cleaned and seasoned oer instructions. It comes with a coating of wax on it that must be removed before seasoning and using but was easy to do and I did at home before we left

What can you cook with a pie iron?
Pie Irons are so much fun. We use them for camping, fire pit, bbq, and sometimes on our gas stove. They are very versatile. We cook a lot of different things in them from grilled cheese sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, chicken, steak, cinnamon rolls, monkey bread, garlic bread, and so on. The instructions say to season them before you use them. We seasoned ours in the bbq on the grill at 300-400 degrees for 15 min. We first wiped them down with vegetable oil. Pam, Crisco, vegetable oil, olive oil, will all work fine. After the recommended 15 min, we repeated the process. The more times you do this the better non-stick surface you will create. Tip: Wipe down between each use; it makes it easier to clean. Do not use soap to clean since it is cast iron. Soap will strip the seasoning away. Use a good scrub brush like a chain mail scrubber, then wipe down with towel when dry. Don't let them air dry. Water on cast iron equals rust. Also, wipe down with more oil after you have cleaned and are ready to put away. This also helps prevent rust. We do this on all our cast iron pans after each use. Recipe ideas: Carnea-sada. Use skirt steak, or whatever steak you choose to use and marinate with a Carnea-sada seasoning. Cook in pie-iron and serve with fixings same as you would for tacos. Monkey Bread: Get a can of biscuits. 1/4 the biscuits dough. Put brown sugar, regular sugar, and cinnamon in Ziploc bag. Place cut up dough in bag and shake. Place dough in pie iron and cook until golden brown and dough is done. One of our favorites the kids love. Grilled cheese sandwich: Make your favorite grilled cheeses any way you want and cook in pie-iron. For really good one try Pesto, Avocado, Havarti and Turkey. Picture below is of ham and cheese. Really easy to cook in pie iron and tastes awesome. Update: 5/18 Almost two years later and they work just like the day we got them. Definitely recommend.

Perfect Pie Iron
I had carefully reviewed different brands of pie irons, and settled on this brand because it is the one used/recommended by the Wisconsin pie iron chefs who wrote the Pudgie Pie Revolution cookbook(s). (I also purchased the round pie iron, which I will review separately). And, we could not be happier! We have used this iron a few times over our charcoal grill & over a fire, & it has always produced perfect pies. But, I FIRMLY BELIEVE that what has contributed to our success was the purchase of the cookbook to go along with because it describes exactly how to prepare the food & pie irons according to what type of outer layer you'll be using. Without the cookbook, we would've been lost. This is NOT an endorsement for the cookbook - I'm simply stating a fact. SIZE: This square pie iron is the perfect size to accommodate a full piece of bread, small flour tortilla, egg roll wrapper, etc. And, you want the outer layer to flow over the top of the iron so that when you clamp it shut, that extra layer around the edge forms a seal. DESIGN: There is a clamp closer to the handle that easily opens and closes the two halves of the pie iron. The other end of the pie iron folds completely off so you can prepare each half of the iron with your ingredients. COOKING: We follow the instructions in the cookbook, but this iron only takes about three minutes on each side to produce an evenly cooked pie. And, because the latch allows you to open it while cooking, you're able to see how the outer layer is doing. CLEANUP: We use a nylon-bristled brush with warm water to clean the irons. When finished, we lightly run in some oil & sea salt. Cleanup is usually simply, unless the fillings spill out onto the iron, which shouldn't happen if the pies are not overfilled.

great
Nice product- solid, well built cast iron, good length handles for its heft. This is heavy, so unless you have the perfect place to rest a larger version, this is as big as I would recommend you go. It will only fit bread 'standard Wonder size', which is tough for me as I never buy this kind, but as I said, a larger iron would be too heavy to deal with for very long. The cast iron was blemish free, however I noted that there was a crack in one of the handles that had obviously been repaired and the stain there was very dark over the patch job. I hope it never gives way there. The heavy wax that comes on the cast iron needs to be burnt off and then the cast iron seasoned (just like pretty much any other piece of cast iron) so be prepared to do this. But it has been fun to make sandwiches on the fireplace this winter and will be fun at the campfire.

Camps Best Friend!
Seasoning: Ok so seasoning is a bit time consuming, especially since I also bought the round pie iron (seasoning x2). I do recommend using Crisco and wiping the iron with a paper towel or rag before each turn and recoat to ensure it is properly coated. If not the "seasoning" can chip off in areas and rust will develop. Also using a latex glove is great not to get hands greasy. Cooking: OMG everything taste so good coming out of the pie iron! What was nice is you can cook everything in the pie iron in stages. Sausage first then set aside, eggs then set them aside, place buttered bread in and assemble. SO EASY! We did breakfast sandwiches with white bread and also a corn tortilla version (also great), fruit pies (get croissant dough it's the best), and even reheated pizza! Conclusion: I am still excited about what we will dream up next to cook lol! Every camper has to own one of these no doubt! I keep mine in the house now and have used it on my gas stove. Even though my wife gets at me for using it in the house I don't care it's totally worth it!!

Pie cooker? Nonsense. It's a grilled cheese heaven's gateway.
"Pie cooker" is indisputably the worst name they could have selected for this cooker. Who the hell brings pie filling camping? Crazy people do. A better name is "Evidence for God sandwich cooker," because anything can be turned into a sandwich, and just about everything goes into a sandwich while camping. This cooker makes the hands-down BEST -- no exaggeration, over-sell or meaningless hyperbole -- grilled cheese on the planet. You literally won't find better grilled cheese technology. About 10 years ago a friend introduced me to the legendary pie cooker. I spent the whole day post-camping trip driving around my and the neighboring towns trying to find one for my camp sack. At the time, Amazon didn't sell them. And every time I've gone camping since, I've checked Amazon to no avail. Finally, a week before camping in Sequoia National Park a week ago, this hot puppy popped up on an apathetic search, and so became the first time I employed overnight shipping. I insisted my camp buddies turn around, drive an hour back to my house and pick up the just-delivered cooker. Nobody regretted this decision the night I dug out the sharp chipotle cheddar, Monterey jack and multi-grain bread. Silence swelled over the campfire and the stars rejoiced. We applied ample butter. The fact this cooker costs only $20 indicates that there is a God. Or, rather, some Godly force in effect. Possibly karma. And anyone with an internet connection and a credit card may shave off his slice of karma, just before slathering it between two slices of buttered toast and shoving it into a campfire. One recommendation: the dude packaging these in the enormous box for which it's delivered severely dropped the ball. This cooker would be unquestionably more awesome if it were bundled with some recipe ideas, even if they were print-outs or something. So far, I've embarked on pie-cooked grilled cheese, smores, several kinds of omelets/quiches and a variety of burger-infused sandwiches. I still haven't made a pie from this, but I'm not opposed to the idea. Although, I'll be dumbfounded the day I unbundle my mess kit and take to the cooler for pie filling instead of marshmallows, Special Dark and graham cracker.

Love em!
Bought two of these for a recent camping trip, and am very happy with them! I cook with cast iron a lot, so aluminum pans held no appeal for me, I wanted cast iron. These irons arrived quickly, in great shape and well packaged and closed up nicely. I seasoned them by first boiling off the paraffin wax that they were shipped covered with, then dried them well and stuck them on my home gas burners to completely dry them, then coated with a thin layer of Crisco. I started the gas grill with the irons apart and laying on a piece of aluminum foil, and let them bake for an hour then cool. I repeated this four times, coating with a thin layer of Crisco then back on the grill, alternating which sides faced up. The irons turned a lovely shade of black from the industrial grey, and I found a cotton bag that had held a pound of pistachios at Christmas (that I had washed to get salt out). The bag is just big enough to fit the two irons, and tied at the top just above the iron, and this is a great way to store and transport them.. On our trip, we were not using the firepit much, so I used the small gas grill that came with the camper to cook our pudgie pies. I used King's Hawaiian sandwich bread, which is a slightly sweet white bread (yum!) and a can of blueberry pie filling, first spraying the inside of the irons with Pam and using butter on the outside of the bread and filling in the middle. Toasted til golden brown, mmmmm dee-lish! The King's bread fits almost perfectly, needing a minimum of trimming, which the chipmunk enjoyed. Second round sprayed again and added a little lemon juice and cinnamon to the blueberry filling, even better. Only had to brush a few crumbs off, let irons cool and stored em away in the pistachio bag, waiting for our next adventure. Looking forward to a toasted ham n cheese sandwich next...

Works but follow my tips
I love this pie iron. Had my first ones camping 50+ years ago as a kid. This brought back memories and next generation loved them. I seasoned with grape seed oil. Tip - cheapest sliced white bread and cherry pie filling has always been the favorite. After seasoning your iron and getting it hot in coals, butter one side (pie iron side) and place on each half (match tops/bottoms when closed), add 2-3 tablespoons of pie filling, place opposing bread slice over filling/bread slice, close pie iron. Heat on one side 12-15 seconds, flip pie iron and toast another 12-15 seconds. Open iron and look at one side/close iron - flip - check other side. Place side needing more toastiness back in red hot coals until golden brown. First mountain pie is usually a throw-away so use a little less pie filling. Enjoy!

This is a great addition to the camping kitchen
Love this pie iron. Initially when I received it I thought it looked too small for a standard size slice of bread, however allowing for the indentation of the irons it became apparent that the size is more than adequate. It took a while to season per the instructions - cast iron retains a lot of heat an took time to cool before applications of shortening but once done I had great fun experimenting with toasted treats and didn't have problems with sticking. I tried egg and bacon toasted sandwiches, toasted cheese filled tortilla wrap, and finally apple pastries using store bough ready-rolled chilled croissant dough and tinned apples - all were super easy and were a winner with the family. With a hot fire from a small firebox stove I was turning the pastries and sandwiches around in about 5 minutes each. There are lots of recipe ideas on youtube. Well pleased with this pie iron. It's going to be a great addition to our camping kitchen and depending on how we get on in the field I may purchase a second one.

quality product
Arrived packaged very well with detailed instruction. I can tell it was made with care. I researched the snot out of these cookers on Amazon (and elsewhere), read tons of reviews and ultimately landed on this one. Very glad I did. We followed the seasoning instructions and started cooking over a camp fire. Worked perfectly every time. We already had a different pie cooker (as do our friends) but this one is defiantly our favourite...the quality, size and shape of the iron part is perfect for any loaf of store bought white bread. The handles are quality and comfortable to use. If I ever need to order another one I will get this one again.
