Yes, This IS the Real Thing!
I like my music with some serious soul in it. Not the artificial soul of what passes for modern R&B; I mean real stuff that comes from the gut. JJ Grey's new CD "Georgia Warhorse" is one of the most soulful albums I've heard in a long time.Let me start with my favorites. "Gotta Know" is a slow and sensitive ballad that crescendos into a powerful guspel-filled jam. "Hide and Seek" is some serious swamp rock with a killer guitar riff and hook. "Georgia Warhorse" provides some great swamp blues about - what else? - the indestructible insect that the song is named after. "Sweetest Thing" reminds me of the type of mid-tempo soul that Otis Redding might do (and Grey's voice is very comparable).Really, all the songs on this CD are quite different but there isn't one that is a "filler." They are all quite good and Gray's raspy vocals combined with the songs' semi-raw production make this a real treat to listen to.If you are a fan of old (new) soul a la Marc Broussard, JJ Grey and Mofro's "Georgia Warhorse" will be right up your alley.

Another Great Grey effort!
I have been sold on JJ Grey since I saw him at our local blues festival. He has become one of my favorite singers and song writers. He has a voice that growls and roars with the best of 'em, yet he can deliver a nice ballad with a very clear, voice without a rasp. His band is very impressive with the fast, loud songs. I love the rhythm section and his trumpet and sax players are tremendous. My only partially negative comment is that I enjoyed his "This River" CD even more.

well worth it
I heard a review of this album on NPR. Since I am always looking for something interesting and have recently discovered this "funky bluesy" genre, I thought that I would give it a chance even though I never heard of the artist before. It was money well spent! Solid lyrics, great melodies and rocking hooks. The title song is the best of a very good bunch. If you are looking for something a bit different than your standard R&B, pop, neo-soul, country or blues, give this one a try; you won't be disappointed.

Almost 5 stars
If I had never heard Black Water, Lochloosa, or Country Ghetto this would be a 5 star. It's a great album, but when compared to the previous albums....it falls a hair short. Still, it's better than 90 percent of the stuff other bands do on their best days. Stand outs are "Georgia Warhorse", "King Hummingbird" and "Slow, Hot and Sweaty". Not quite as bluesy as I like my JJ, and I think that's the only reason it gets 4 because it is very good.

JJ Grey & Mofro is a perfect example of one of my prized Amazon discoveries. I love their music and now own everything they have released. This collection is smooth and such a pleasure to listen to and has further solidified JJ Grey and Mofro as one of my favorite acts. This collection is definitely worth the purchase price.

Worth it
Stax, Otis, Cocker, Van Morrison, Little Feat...Georgia Warhorse will empty, evert and cleanse your soul. Then it'll hand it back to you shiny and new.But unlike, say, Blackwater (so love that drumming!!!), this one had to grow on me. It also needs more Hance, harmonica, luscious keyboard licks... in short, the stuff that elicits groans.A bit lazy and overly-repetitive in parts (how many Diyo-dayo's and Sweetest Things do we need?... we get it). But in whole, (and in part due to its stomp/boogie cuts) JJ et al. have proffered some of my most joyful moments available lately. As so with all the other works, it is sublime.

Great cross over music
I have just recently discovered JJG&M, and wonder how they have slipped under my radar for so long. Although Georgia Warhorse isn't their best effort, it's very much worth listening to...over and over again. They have a different blend of styles from funk to blues to folk to rock, and all of them are performed very well.

IF YOU LIKE GOOD MUSIC YOU WILL LOVE THIS
Once again Paul Jones on the Blues show on Radio 2 has turned me onto an artist of whom I had no prior knowledge of. (The last one was Joanne Shaw Taylor). During a studio interview with JJ Grey, I was taken with the quality of the tracks being selected and the stories behind some of which were intriguing. What struck me first was the vocal style. It initially put me in mind of Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes, particularly on the song King Hummingbird. Only after the interview was over did I get the name of the artist and up to that point I had convinced myself that this was a Chris Robinson solo outing. Having pulled the car over at the end of the interview awaiting the album and artist title, I promptly ordered this recording on arrival home. Not only did the album delight in its entirety, but a number of musical and vocal styles became apparent. The opening song Diyo Dayo was reminiscent of Lee Brilleaux of Dr Feelgood fame; there is the strong flavour of The Black Crowes throughout several songs and also a very strong Southern Soul feel. A genuinely good album of a late sixties blues / soul / rock flavour. If this style is your thing I cannot recommend this highly enough. One thing for certain, I shall be seeking out further recordings by JJ Grey.

My new fav band!
I saw a write up of this album in a guitar magazine and gave it a test on Amzon, then bought it. Initial reaction was ok, interesting, I'll listen again. By the 3rd listen I was hooked. I have since bought the previous 4 albums :)This is laid back swamp, blues & funk (is that a new genre? SB&F?) with stunning lyrics. There is a YouTube video of JJ singing "The Sweetest Thing" with Toots Hibbert which is well worth watching. There isn't a bad track on this album and I really think it is worth every penny!
