Family Comedy/Drama Entertainer That Delivers
Swarg (Heaven) is a Bollywood family film with heavy drama leavened with comedy bits, traces of practical wisdom and the immense energy of a young Govinda. There is also the legendary Rajesh Khanna, a very young Juhi Chawla and young but treacherous Paresh Rawal. This is an over the top 90's classic with sumptuous item numbers, great music with great choreography in magnificent natural settings. But the clincher is the great story and script. Some of the many Hindi family films are seriously somber. But Swarg is very dramatic and comic with a healthy dose of reality about what life is like in India and Bombay and in the Hindi film industry. This topper in its time is very wise and insightful on the fly and the drama is deep but the tone is ever hopeful. Also it is a celebration with much love and affinity for the little guy and his potential to become a really big person. The plot may be hugh-pitched melodrama with farcical touches but at the end of day it is all quite touching. You can't but feel better after watching this film because the characters' struggles are real yet a sunny optimism prevails throughout. Even though Govinda has aged considerably he always radiates an irrepressible energy that probably started with this film and makes him a joy to watch. He enlivens every film he's in, even if it's for only a short cameo. You'll love this movie!
