Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5 12G HDR

These new monitors from blackmagic (the 5 and 7 inch versions) are absolutely fantastic! They’re HDR screens which is fantastic with compatible cameras (I use it on my Ursa Mini Pro 12K which works wonderfully)! The brightness is insane! Indoors I usually have it at 30% or so depending on the light levels, and outside if you set it to 100% you’ll be fine with no sunhood on a sunny day, which is amazing! It’s also super quiet, the fans are never a problem! It looks gorgeously sharp, so it’s nice for focus pulling, and the colours seem pretty accurate for using as an on camera monitor for a DP too. The monitor cross converts between hdmi and SDI, and has a loop so you can connect a teradek transmitter to the monitor if you need, or something like a CineEye. Recording function is great, you can record blackmagic raw from certain cameras such as my Nikon Z6ii, which works amazingly! There’s USB C recording, or SD slots which is fine for more compressed BRAW recording so long as the cards are good quality. Blackmagic raw gives you so much more flexibility in post, as settings like iso and white balance become metadata that can all be changed. It’s a fantastic monitor, I’d highly recommend it!

Moniteur de très bonne qualité. L'achat vient avant tout du fait de pouvoir enregistrer au format BRAW sur mes appareils LUMIX ce qui donne une plus grande polyvalence en post production sur l'étalonnage dans DaVinci Resolve Studio! On retrouve les outils de monitoring nécessaires, fausse couleurs, waveform etc. Bref un must have si l'on veut du Braw sur un appareil compatible.

This monitor delivers pretty, reliable and consistent results. We use it for the Nikon Z6 to record 10-bit N-Log, for which the product is perfect. We also use it as a monitor for the BMPCC 4K, and though there is a certain mismatch between the BMPCC's in-built LCD and the VA's, this is not something unbearable. Just keep in mind, that above 2000 unit of brightness, the unit is prone to heat up, resulting in a need to switch off for some time. I wholeheartedly could recommend this product. PS: it is certainly not color-perfect, but it is not it's main goal in my understanding - however, the scopes are super reliable, just as you expect from BM products.
