Awesome Pormido PR996
This is the first Dash Cam I've ever used. Before Purchasing, I did extensive research on dash cameras. I researched the cheapest and most expensive ones on the market and all in between. Then I just so happen to find this gem that replaces your rearview mirror. My goal was to find a dual dash cam that can record front and back. Pormido does this with ease. Now I have confidence and can rest a little easy because if anything happens on the road, front or back accidents, I have video evidence.Pormido PR996 operates on a 12V plug that most cars have. Older folks know them as cigarette lighter sockets. Todays generation mainly uses them for charging their cell phones in the car. The 12V plug that Pormido provides to power the unit does not have any extra ports and it takes up the whole 12V socket so some folks may have a problem with that because you will not be able to charge your phone and power the Pormido at the same time, but there are ways around this.1. You could buy a dual port. A device that turns one 12V port into two. Not sure how safe it is, but I know they make them. Just Google: Dual 12V outlet2. There is a hardwire kit sold separately for Pormido to power the unit without using the 12V port.Luckily for me, I have an extra 12 port in the back of my car.I drive a Jeep Renegade and the Pormido PR996 works and fits perfectly. I was worried that the 12V cord would not be long enough because I used the 12V plug in the trunk to power the unit and the cord needs to plug into mirror in the front. The 12V cord was long enough to run power from back to front. This way I am able to keep my front 12V outlet open to charge me and my passenger cell phones. There is another cord that runs from the mirror to the rear dash cam and that was more than long enough. It was way longer than the 12V power cord, and that is to be expected. I was able to install the Pormido in less than two hours. I tucked all the cords away into the trim and that part can be a little tough. Pormido provides a plastic tool to help tuck cords into trim. I ended up breaking the tool while tucking the cords, but I still managed to get the cords nicely tucked away without it. When I was done with the install, it looks like it was professionally done, because there are no cords to be seen.Pormido Mirror uses rubber straps to attach to existing mirror. The unit provides various length straps to be able to attach to any size mirror. The way Pormido designed this unit, from the inside of the car, you can't tell that it is a mirror strapped onto an existing mirror. It looks like the Pormido mirror came with the car. The straps do a great job of keeping the unit firmly attached and there is no shaking or vibration of the mirror while driving.Pormido PR996 kit comes with a 32GB Sandisk memory card, so you can install and record your driving right away. The unit can support up to 128GB cards but I haven't tried it yet.The Menu on this unit is awesome. It is simple yet effective. It doesn't use wifi, and it's not going to connect to your smartphone, but it gets the job done. If you need to show footage to someone (law enforcement, insurance), you need to have them sit in the car so you can playback on the mirror unit, or you need to take the memory card out and playback and/or save on another device. The unit records in TS mode, and can take photos in JPG format. The mirror touch screen responds fast and the unit turns on right away when I start the car. I don't have to wait for the mirror to warm up or start up, it is super fast when starting the car. The mirror goes directly to the rear camera screen when I start the car so I can drive right away if I'm in a hurry. The rear view camera is awesome, it can see really well at night and even if a car is right behind you at night with their headlights, the camera can still read the front license plate if they are close enough. At night, with a regular rearview mirror, sometimes headlights behind you can glare into your mirror and hurt the eyes. Pormido rear camera fixes this, because the glare from headlights can still be seen through the rear camera and into the mirror screen, but they will not be blinding. The rear view camera is really good at utilizing light at night. Even on a pitch-black road I can see the road behind me at night because my tail lights light up the road behind me and the rear camera uses that light, and you will always see a vehicle behind you at night because of their lights. One of the best features of the rear view camera is that it takes away about 97% of your blindspots. You will always pretty much know what vehicles are behind or beside you. But always practice safe driving and double check your blind spots before making lane changes, and backing out, etc.The rear camera is supposedly waterproof and can be attached to the outside of the car. I put the rear camera on the inside of my car using the double sided sticky that came with the kit. It rained this past week and I was able to see clearly even in the rain. The rear camera looks out the back window and someone might have a problem if the window is wet. I have a rear wiper to keep the window clear in the rain so the camera always has perfect vision of the back.I really Love the Pormido because it is not a dash cam that attaches to the front window. The front camera is very discreet. This is not the most expensive or the cheapest on the market. It is a very good unit at a reasonable price.Cons: Only problems I have was the rear camera fell off the sticky. The unit came with another sticky that I am currently using. I bought Gorillaz double sided sticky that I keep in the car in case this other stick tape fails. The plastic trimmer broke but I don't need it anymore since the unit is installed. If you format the memory card, all files, including saved files will be deleted. If you need saved footage for insurance/law enforcement, it is probably best to have another memory card for back up.Don't be like Larry. Take off the blue film tint that is protecting the camera lens when you get the unit.

A Solid Performer for the Price
I have shopped a lot of dash-cams, and watched and read dozens of reviews, but this one jumped out at me as remarkably different with the full width 12" display, as well as for the wider field of vision than many of the other over-the-mirror options out there.I have not been using it for long, but I am the kind of person to update my reviews when things come up. So if you are reading this several months or years down the road and don't see any updates, that is because I still like it!This camera mirror has a very OEM look to it from inside the car and in no way looks or feels cheaply made. (But any over the mirror add-on is still going to look slightly out of place.)The display is clear and bright in daylight, but adequately dim at night. You can either allow it to auto-adjust, or manually change brightness by swiping left or right. I also like that it is a single button push on the bottom to either turn it on or off for normal mirror use, and that is the only button. All other functions are accessed with the touch screen menu that pops up as soon as you touch the mirror. (Trust me on this if you are new to dash-cams. Ease of use has been a fantasy with cryptic menu buttons you cannot read the function of from the driver seat!) I have taken to leaving it on at night. I deflect the mirror slightly downward to limit double images from the display and the mirror simultaneously, and it is perfectly usable that way with video only. Otherwise, the reflection and video combined can be a bit disconcerting. The touch screen is not super-sensitive, requiring relatively deliberate action, but it responds well. Mirror clarity is superb if you prefer to keep the video off.The front camera provides enough angular adjust-ability to allow for various mirror angles and plenty of field of view, reaching nearly completely to the A-pillars on my i3. (I can just see the bottom corners of the glass.) It provides a nice clear 1080p feed with a vertically scroll-able view for live display, though it records the full 1920x1080 format from the camera. It also seems to perform about as well or maybe slightly better than my eyes do at night, and the rear camera is even better - without washing out from headlights. It is definitely an improvement over the OEM i3 backup camera for field of view and resolution.I installed the rear camera inside the rear glass near the top, and that provides a good vantage point for traffic behind, and the touch-screen scrolling provides enough vertical range that I can see down to within a couple of feet of my bumper from there if needed without compromising full horizontal viewing to the rear. (But if you really need a an actual backup camera, I would recommend an exterior mount that allows you to actually see your rear bumper or objects within a few inches.) I also made sure to mount it low enough to be in the swept area of my rear wiper. There are a couple of different options for using the mounting hardware that make finding the right camera angle relatively simple, and for my car, I had at least 6 feet of extra wire that I bundled under the rear seat cushion. If you do choose to mount the camera inside, be sure to avoid sticking the mounting pad over defroster lines, as well as keep the defroster lines out of the center field of view of the camera. You don't want your defrost lines ruined if the camera ever gets removed, and they will show up as a distorted zone in the video feed.A nice bonus is that with warranty registration, Pormido currently provides a giveaway of your choice of 4 different items - including the GPS - so don't order the GPS with this! Just be sure to complete the registration within two weeks of receiving the dash cam.In short, at this point I would not hesitate to repurchase this camera, and I may actually do so for my other car. So long as it proves to be reliable, I don't expect to have to revise this review much.
