I am so happy I bought this. It works, it's well made, and it is better than I expected! I have Illy an espresso machine that takes iperespresso pods, and I think they are discontinuing my favorite flavor, Intenso. We use our moka pot, but I don't love the flavor coming out of it. This capsule is a godsend. I can put any espresso in it and it comes out just perfect! There is crema, and there are no grounds in my cup! I have not tried a long pour, but I normally don't have one. I don't think it would be a problem. This is going to save me so much money on ordering pods!! And it is so much better for the environment! We may order a second one because after one shot is poured it is too hot to be able to clean and refill to make a second shot for my spouse. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. Excellent value!

I have the Y3 Iperespresso machine from Illy, which is basic but makes excellent espresso. I also have a subscription from Illy for the capsules, because that offers a discount, free shipping, AND free recycling of the pods. I still hate to see the huge pile of pods being used and tossed (well, recycled, but still), and wanted to find a better less wasteful option. This Capsulone metal capsule works in my machine, and makes a good cup of coffee. I have used ground Illy coffee with it, but love the versatility of being able to choose the kind of coffee I use, and grind the beans myself. Now I spread out the subscription orders and use the Capsulone in between shipments. I'll probably phase out the sub eventually, when I perfect the technique with the Capsulone. It comes with instructions, and I recommend following them. How much you fill it and compress the coffee is key. If it's not right, wacky things can happen - once the machine wouldn't stop until the water tank was empty, spilling coffee all over my counter/floor. Keep an eye on it until you get it right, just in case. When it's right, it makes a proper espresso, crema and all. Others mentioned the tiny metal screen filter - yes, be careful when you dump out used grounds, as the filter can come out with it. I haven't accidentally thrown it out (yet), but I see how it can happen. Might be a good idea for Capsulone to include a 2nd filter in the box. I recommend this item for anyone who has the Y3 Iperespresso but wants to use their own coffee instead of Illy's plastic pods.

Update, 15 months in: TAP, DON’T TAMP! I had a lot of problems with consistency, always trying different amounts, tamping lightly or not. Until one day I TAPPED the filled thimble filter on the counter about half a dozen times. The espresso settled into place, and I’ve had PERFECT shots using pre-ground Illy espresso ever since. THIS IS THE TRICK. Note: I use regular Pods for other roasts, but this approach probably works out to less than 20 cents per shot. You’ll recoup your $ for this steel filter in a week or two.) ======= original review below===== Finely ground some coffee, scooped it in, LIGHTLY tamped, capped, into the Illy. Worked perfectly. Yes, the machine seems not to sense the brew time, so you have to push the "off" button. Probably a sensor thing. But at the price/waste of plastic in the iper capsules, seems like a small thing. Second brew, I left the screen out. Same results. I'm going to try with some commercially ground coffee soon and will see if I can just omit the screen for good. Crema was even nice. I figure if I make 12 cups of coffee with this, it's paid for itself. But I imagine I'll make hundreds.

I have been using these daily for about a year. You need to grind the coffee fine to extra fine and use the fine mesh screens for the best results. While I really like the ILLY capsules, these make just as good a cup (or better) using great beans finely ground. Rather than spending $.60 a capsule and filling up a landfill with plastic, I'm now spending about $.25 per capsule for just as good a cup. These capsules are highly rust resistant and none of them have failed - so far. There is one downside...The screens are a pain to clean as coffee can get stuck in them. Even with that, they are still worth it.

This was great at first but then clogged so that no coffee comes out. Im guessing the filter is too fine.

I have the cheaper Illy machine, the one that looks like it was designed as a prop for a sci fi movie in the 1950's, and these (I have two so far) work perfectly in it. Just tamp the espresso powder down, insert it, and push the button. The machine can't tell the difference. It runs exactly the way it does with a plastic capsule and shuts off automatically. The result is just what you'd get from an official capsule, too, complete with a layer of frothy 'crema' on top. No tamper comes with this, so you can either buy one separately, or THE LID CAN BE USED AS A TAMPER. Just fill the cup to the top with espresso powder, level it off, and push the lid down. That will compact the coffee perfectly. It took me a while to figure this out, because I can be an idiot. You have to spend a few seconds cleaning these afterward. I scrape out as much of the powder as I can, then put them in the dishwasher. They'll either sit in the silverware holder or, if you have a machine with the third shelf, the shallow one at the very top, you can put them there. It's a little more effort than the throw-away cups, but well worth it. Cheaper coffee, just as delicious, and no more plastic waste. ETA: The only downside to them is that everyone who says the reusable metal filter is easily lost or damaged is absolutely right. Especially in the beginning. Great concept but just does not work like it should. These capsules look of decent quality but functionality misses the mark. Let me be clear I tried many times including just about every grind consistency and tamping or tapping. The best method was a fine grind(but not too fine or it just clogs). Furthermore, the design I would almost classify as dangerous. If you accidentally grind too fine and the coffee does not come out soon after activating your machine. Turn it off! When this happened to me the capsule started to over pressurize and nearly cause the top of the machine to blow open. I had to wait until some of the pressure was eventually forced out before I could even reopen the capsule loading lid. If you turned this on and didn’t pay attention it could legit explode from pressure buildup. Found another brand that screws together - much better design and no issues related to grind consistency that I have found yet. None of them will be quite as perfect as an original capsule but this design, while good looking is poorly engineered for the machines it was designed to be used.

You need to tamp the coffee in an espresso capsule and this setup doesn't come with a tamper. 50 cents worth of extra parts would have earned a 5-star review.
