When they say "modernized re-imagining", they are not kidding. It is a drastically different story, more like a sequel. As the back cover implies, the story takes place after the events of the original story, but they've changed this up a bit too. They gender-bent the original story and then leapt forward twenty years to this new crisis in their lives. All of that did confuse me for the first bit, mostly because I didn't read the back cover before starting it and had gotten the impression from the front cover that this was a straightforward telling of the original in comic form. But I corrected my expectations and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the story. Thoroughly.Then there's the art. It's beautiful, but it's also clearly not for kids. I'm not entirely against nudity or comic art being sexy, but I would have liked having to be able to recommend this story to a wider audience.If you enjoy fairy tale retellings or reimaginings as much as I do, definitely pick this up!

The characters were well-written; and the darker nature still stayed true to the original story (Hans Christian Andersen, not the Disney version which was far lighter).

Great art work, but this is only half the story. Do yourself a favour do nor read this till you have read Grimm fairy tales myths & legends volume 2. The story is starts 20 years ago, and is the origin of the Grimm version of the little mermaid, Erica, this is where the GFTM&L volume 2 would explain about Erics' life and powers, this story stars assuming we know all this. Erics been kidnapped and experimented for her heritage. Even she does not know what her real legacy is. This story was good but it is really there is a big part missing what is here is a bit rushed. I would have given this 3.5 stars but the artwork brought it up to 4 for me. Aside for the story we are also the cover gallery of the variant covers of all 5 issues.

Was a Christmas present, it came quickly and they absolutely loved it!
