Not as noisy as reviewed by others
I ordered this since obviously my pump broke. I was really worried to get this one as it was different from the original, it didn't have the flow adjuster on the side, which is minor, I never really paid close attention to how slow or fast the flow was. Got the new one, installed and it's not as quiet as the original, but it isn't that loud, it has a soft hum to it, it's not even annoying, but then I guess it depends on where you place it and how close it is to your everyday space. I am completely pleased with the replacement and am so glad to find it for less than half the price as what my local pet store charges. I am a little surprised how the old one broke. I was just taking it apart to clean as we had stopped using it until I could find the filters. I tried to pull out the pump and the cord snapped off from the back, which it snapped right off from the base and the wire inside looks corroded. Which scares me, how long were those wires exposed and how the heck did that even happen? I wasn't the original owner, I got it from someone who was getting rid of it, so this could have been something they did. But none the less, I am happy with the replacement pump. I have a cat who just had surgery and needs to wear a cone, not sure how well he is able to access this, but the main reason why I set out to get this up and running. :)

Replacement pump for Petmate fountains bought 2002 & 2005
> Update 3/7/2022: The latest replacement pumps seem to run at a lower flow rate than the previous replacements. Also, no hot plastic smell or hum from the ones I bought February 2022. I've had no problems with the replacements. They have lasted for years. I'm still using the same old blue and white fountains from 2002 and 2005, with replacement pumps. < I own two Petmate water fountains, and both of them have a lot of hours on them now. The oldest one is the smaller "original" model that I bought in summer of 2002. It's white and has a see-through blue water tank. The second one, I bought in 2005 or 2006, and it was called the "large" model at that time. It is also white plastic with the same color of blue water tank as the earlier fountain. It's just bigger. I can't find a model number on either of them. I tried this replacement pump in both fountains. Other reviews mentioned that the pump does not have the rate adjustment lever on it, and that is true. It runs at one speed only, and that seems, to me, higher output than the maximum rate of the original pumps that came with the two fountains I have, as well as the Petmate OEM replacement pumps that I subsequently purchased a few of over the years. I didn't attempt to mate the front end of the older pump with the business end of this new one, because I always ran my pumps flat-out anyway, in order to help prevent hair buildup and clogs. I also never used the charcoal filters, because I just considered them a haven for bacteria and biofilms. To cut to the chase: This pump is a drop-in replacement on the "Large" fountain. Install it, and you're done. It runs at a brisk rate and it produces a strong flow. There is no risk of overflowing any part of the Large fountain. The new pump has an audible hum that the older ones didn't. And it has a "hot plastic" smell at the transformer and the tip of the wire that plugs into the transformer, which makes me wonder just how long it will last or whether it's another Chinese-import fire risk. But it's run flawlessly for over 2 months now, although it still has an odor. I tried the same pump in the "Original" fountain, just to see whether or not its boosted flow rate would cause any flooding or would overflow the bowl somehow. It didn't. If your floor slopes or your fountain is on a slight incline in some way, I can see where this high-flow pump might be too much. If this pump is too much flow for your small fountain, and it's the only replacement you can find, read back through the reviews here to find the one where some engineer-type modified his pump with a homemade flow-restrictor disc that he placed in the outlet of the pump. The previous reviews that said they had to file off a small bit of material to make the fountain parts clear this pump are correct: This case is apparently just a bit larger than the original pump, and the part of the fountain where the water wells up before it goes down the ramp won't clip back on correctly unless you file off whatever is binding. It's not a huge problem, but the "Original" fountain just won't clip back together exactly the same-as-new without you doing a little removal of material. It *almost fits, though. All things considered, buying two of these pumps on Amazon cost me about the same as getting just one of the now-discontinued OEM pumps with the flow rate control. And a pump is far less expense than buying my cats a brand new water fountain. These pumps seem to be a reasonable value for the price. fwiw, the original pump in the "Large" fountain ran continuously from 2005 or 2006 when I bought the fountain to October of 2011. THAT one was a *good* pump, haha!

Drinkwell Platinum Replacement, with Modifications
I have a fairly old Drinkwell Platinum unit, perhaps 4 or 5 years old. Since Drinkwell was acquired by PetMate, their company website no longer sells replacement parts. An Amazon search pulled this unit up, and with other reviewers saying it worked I took a chance on it. In my case, it did not work. These are the differences I've found: (1) There is no flow control valve. However, like the old pump, you can remove the flow control valve by prying your fingernail into the seam, as it just clips on. However, I couldn't swap the old valve cover onto the new pump, because the dimensions are slightly different. (2) The outlet of the pump is different from my old pump. The Drinkwell has a column of plastic that plugs into the pump, so the water flows up, and the connection is male-to-female. That is, the Drinkwell plugs into the pump. However, the new pump is the opposite; it is expecting to plug into the DrinkWell. For problem (1): I think it's possible to file the old valve cover to fit, or I could live without flow control. I decided to live without it; if I wanted to reduce flow, I could just cover up some of the pump intake slots with something. The valve control essentially does the same thing...it's not electronic or anything, it just blocks water from entering the impeller. The DrinkWell Platinum also has a hair filtering plastic gate where the valve control used to stick from. There's a hole left, which lets bigger particles into the pump area. To cover it, I snipped a thin strip of aluminum foil and threaded it between the grill slits, and wrapped it to cover the hole. For problem (2): It turns out that you can yank out the plug right out of the pump, but I discovered this too late. I'd tried removing it before, but the pump was still damp and my grip wasn't good enough. Thinking it was not removable, I'd used a hacksaw to cut off the end of the DrinkWell pipe so the pump plug would go into it (instead of the other way around), but it didn't seal and water wouldn't rise. to the top of the DrinkWell. So, I brought the pump to Home Depot to find some matching clear plastic tubing. The 7/16th inch tubing fit, and to my surprise it pulled the plug out of the pump, which is how I found out it was removable. Since I'd already modified the DrinkWell, I just threaded the tubing I bought (about 5 bucks for a roll of it) straight up the pipe from the new pump, and cut it to length. It will be a little trouble to change in the future, but it works. So, for me it was not a drop-in replacement, but the pump itself seems to be perfectly fine for whatever it was intended for. DrinkWell Platinum owners may have to be prepared to do a bit of modification to their unit. It's working, but as others have said it's a little louder than the old pump, with a distinct hum.

Fixed My Pet Fountain
I have a Petmate water fountain that i got about a year ago (the kind with the adjustable flow control). The fountain ran dry and burned out the motor, so I bought this motor to replace the broken one. At first, ti didn't look like the motor would fit, but by removing the black knobby thing on top of the motor, you can plug it in to the older model pet fountain. Granted, this motor does not have the flow control value, but that is OK with me (the only person in teh house who played with the flow control was my 5-year old). This new motor saved me from having to throw away the entire $80-ish fountain and get a new one, so it was well worth the money. By the way - I actaully had to get 2 motors. The 1st replacement motor worked great, then I dropped it on the carpet and something came loose, and it stopped working. So I returned it and got this one. I hope not all the motors are so delicate, and that I just happened to get a fritzy one the 1st time, but I am still being careful not to jar this one. I would usually rate a product down for being flimsy, but I am so happy to have my fountain working again (and my cat not pestering me to drink from the bathroom sink) that I gave the motor 5 stars anyway.

For Platinum Drinkwell fountain owners read this first!
I purchased this as a replacement for the Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain and it works beautifully as long as you do the following: - Since it doesn't come with a flow control valve, you have to switch out the old one from your old pump. - You have to remove the front fascia on the pump to attach the flow valve. - You also have to remove the cap that sits over what I call "the water output hole" so that it fits with the top part of the Platinum fountain. I copied this from another person's review. I bought this item based on her review of this pump since I have the Platinum Pet Fountain as well, since my new kitten chewed the wire to my 4 year old drink well fountain. Hoping that I could get away with only paying $14 to fix it instead of $60 to replace the whole thing. At first I could not get the new pump to fit, and I got frustrated at the thought of having to return it. Then I looked again at her review, and saw I forgot to do step 3. Once I did that it worked perfectly! I still could not get the front piece switched out to use my flow control, but I use it without and it works great! I saved the valve control just in case I want to try again when I am more patient, but as for now it works great as it is, and I am a happy camper. Now to find a way to protect the cord from the kitten! I could not find any other replacement pumps for the drinkwell platinum fountain, I am happy it worked! Ps. Make sure you try the other person's steps before you replace your pump if it is not something like the cord being bitten. Many people tried those steps and the pumps started working excellently again. But if you do have to replace it, this is a good place to start!

Good replacement pump
Ordered this to replace nearly 10 year-old pump in Petmate Deluxe Fresh Flow (wire had become exposed). It fit easily. It has a much stronger flow that the previous pump. It doesn't have the flow adjuster, but we never changed the flow rate. It deem seem a bit louder at first, but now it doesn't stand out and our cats still use the use the waterer the same as before. Once you figure out how to disassemble the pump to clean it, it doesn't take very much effort. As much as I've wanted to change out the Petmate (just to get something new) this has been a solid and consistent performer that keeps our cats hydrated.

Good replacement pump for the Drinkwell Platinum Fountain!
My four cats love their Drinkwell Platinum water fountain but to buy replacement parts in Canada is next to impossible. You can order them from Petmate directly, that is if you don't mind paying a $35 shipping fee for a $14.95 pump. For that amount of money I considered and did purchase a new Drinkwell Zen fountain instead because the Platinum are ridiculously expensive right now for some reason. Anyway, I searched to no end and decided to see if there were any pumps that could be adapted to fit the fountain because I didn't want to throw it out as everything else is still in good working order. Several reviews said this pump would not work but alas! it does! the search is over!! When you receive the pump, the only catch is you need to remove the two short water "pipes' that insert directly into the top of the pump. At this point, when you place the reservoir back in place the reservoir spout will fit directly into the pump. You won't be able to adjust the water flow but that's not a problem either. I've had mine running successfully for an hour now with the perfect stream coming out, no spillage or splashing (not counting the cats playing of course). For $12.59 (I bought two) and free shipping my four cats are happy slurping away again, thank you amazon! :)
