Great performing frive for NAS use
I got 6 of the 8 GB versions. I avoided the 10GB becasue it has had historical issues with write caching (perhaps fixed now by firmware update) plu cost per TB was best with the 8GB models. Anyway, back to the review - all 6 seemed to work as expected - they are quiet and fast (for spinners) although one or two seem to get a little warmer than others - possibly because of differing airflows. With a striped mirror (RAID0+1) I get around 700MB/s read and around 450MB/s write real-life use- not too shabby at all. Random speeds drop off a lot obviously. The RAID gives me something like 0.75 GB of write cache (6 disks / 2 * 256MB Cache) which is not to be sniffed at and will significantly improve small random writes. Great disk so far but asks me again in 3 or 4 years if I'm still happy.

Will not initialise.
After purchasing this drive, I never had the time to use until recently. But on trying to initialise it, all I get is an I/O error message. I’ve tried it in several bays on my PC, with various cables, and in different bays on my NAS tower. I’ve also tried it in a friends and my work PC. Still the same error. Not really what I’d expect from Seagate. I’ll have to see if I can still get it replaced and see if the new one works. UPDATE Returned to seller for warranty replacement (cost £28 to send to Florida), only to be informed by the seller after they’d received it that the replacement will be a refurbed drive, not a new one. I did not pay for a refurbed drive, so asked for a refund instead. Their answer was “no”. I’d advise avoiding Tech Dealz (SN Recorded) as they are based in Florida, so returns are expensive. Had to get Amazon to sort this out for me, as the seller was refusing to.

Disks for Synology NAS, good value but not silent
Purchased two of the 8TB Ironwolf drives to replace the existing 2TB Ironwolf drives in a Synology DS718+ NAS. I've had the NAS a couple of years and the 2TB drives have functioned without issue but I needed more space. Easy to upgrade the NAS - as some have mentioned, disks are not silent. I can hear occassional rumbles, but not excessively noisy. Drives are showing as 7.3TB each in the NAS, but this is nothing unusual to see lower than advertised storage space.

Not on the Synology list for DS224+
Drive model number matches that on the Synology compatibility list - but the sub part number does not. I've given up trying to find a drive that installs without error - and gone with Synologies own drives.. Hopefully the support and firmware will be worth the extra dollar.

Fast and quiet
First arrived with damaged actuators, made a lot of clicking a soon as I plugged it in. Sent it back same day and received a replacement two days later. The new one makes next to no noise and read/write transfer between two of them levels out around 180MB/s, but can surge above 200 at times.

Man, these are loud
Great hard drives. 0 issues with the product except they are LOUD! Make sure they're in a separate room and not on your desk.

Noisy Drives failed after 13 months light use in NAS
Purchased this specific model (ST8000VN004-3CP101) as it was one of the few 8TB drives on the exrremely limited Synology compatibility list (but that's another story). I have avoided Seagate drives for many years due to reliability and noise problems. I read the reviews that were available and decided to chance it. Well, 13 months later I'm paying the price. I wish I'd paid the extra and gone with Western Digital. They are, by far, the most reliable drives I've ever used in over 30 years, and they are considerably quieter too! Now I'm having to go through Seagate's labourious RMA process. Yes, they are still within warranty (measured from the date of manufacture / sale to reseller, unless you have proof of purchase), but you have to ship them back at your own cost (tracked and insured ideally), in Anti Static bags (hoipe you kept them!), and then, after a wait at least 7 days while they check them for damage, misuse, or anything else that might void the warranty, you will likely receive a refurbuished item, which could be older then the one you bought. When I get them back I have the joy of rebuilding my NAS and restoring all the data! Then wondering how long I will have before they fail again. I've learned my lesson. No more Seagate for me!

They're fast, reliable, and work with all of the Perc controllers that I have come across so far. They fit into the dell and aftermarket drive trays, show right up and install fast. So far no reliability issues and I have some that are quite old at this point. Can't beat the cost to usefulness ratio!

I'been using Iron Wolf disks in my NAS for a number of years. I'm upgrading my existing unRAID server from 10 4TB Iron Wolf Disks to 10 8TB disks. The disks are reliable, perform well and are not noisy.
