fine lp from 1994 for Kidjo.
Angelique Kidjo is a Beninese-born American Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter and activist, noted for her diverse musical influences and creative music videos. Time magazine has called her "Africa's premier diva" and she has released almost a dozen acclaimed lp s since 1981 and in 2016 is still recording and performing. "Aye" from 1994 is a superb generally upbeat afro-funk hybrid release that features Kidjo s glorious emotive vocals with a mixture of styles that generally favour radio friendly upbeat danceable tracks. a couple of slower tracks give the lp variety and emotional depth , showcasing the strong afro-rhythms and melodies to great effect.Kidjo s vocals are the real deal . not here are the super over wrought commercial US style r&b diva approach, her style is instantly recognisable as "african" i would say. take the slick polyrhythmic funk based backing and her vocals would still carry much emotive impact. "Aye" therefore is a joy for its successful cross-breed of african and western radio friendly backing with strong vocal, rhythyms and catchy melodies. this is a great feel good cd with few dips in quality . highly recommended as is her later release "Oremi" from 1998 with its similar strong mix of memorable songs .

High energy music
I first heard this on a roadtrip in a friend's car and we nearly ran off the road trying to dance while driving. The only disadvantage about having my own copy is that I must play is on high volume and I still can't sit still while it is playing. It is wonderful to find some good music that does not correspond to any of the market's categories or styles. This is just itself, and it is very good.(Wish I knew what the lyrics meant though)
