Good book. It's like a darker
Good book. It's like a darker, grittier Ready Player One. Main character is sometimes hard to root for (kind of a jerk) and the characters could have developed more, but overall story pacing good . Plot is easy to get into (big bad corporation picking on "the working people"). I will be getting the second book, - out later this year!

An action- packed adventure involving gamers!
This book was such an action packed adventure that I couldn't seem to stop reading because I wanted to know what would happen next.I am not much of a gamer so I wasn't sure how'd I'd like the book but in fact I really enjoyed it and the virtual reality aspect really enhanced the book!Imagine a game where you can feel, smell and taste all that's to be had without having to physically go anywhere nor having to spend lots of money to travel? That's the basis of a prototype for new technology from Otherworld and it could open the doors to so many limited by their body constraints particularly those who are paralyzed or disabled. It all sounds wonderful and too good to be true. Well that's because it is and most of the people testing the beta don't realize they're the lab rats and some of them are dying because they're mind is tricked into thinking Otherworld is real and when injured in the game, it can have disastrous consequences.Simon is a gamer who is excited to test the new headsets from Otherworld and it's the only way he can seem to see Kat because she refuses to see him in real life. When his Dad destroys his gear because he took $6000 out of his parents' account to be able to play this new version, he decides to follow Kat around in person and try to learn why she's been acting so strange. One night he follows her to an abandoned place who is there with a group of kids and watches in horror as the first floor where everyone is but him collapses and kills two kids while injuring others including Kat who he manages to save when she starts bleeding from an injury. Following her to the hospital after someone called the ambulance, he learns that she has developed Locked In Syndrome from her accident and may never recover. Then he finds out there's a way she can live through virtual reality with a strange disc attached to the back of her skull. Simon would much rather have her back in real life and soon learns that this virtual reality could have a sinister motive behind it.Simon is in a race against the clock to find out what's really going on, trying to save Kat and when he finally manages to get his own disk, learns that sometimes the latest technology has the potential to kill you.On his journey to find Kat in Otherworld, he makes friends along the way including a guide, an ogre with a sense of humor, a knight and a soccer Mom. Meeting unexpected help along the way thanks to Kat, he's determined to get to the bottom of what's going on and trying not to get killed in world by raging buffalo, The Children (creatures born of an Elemental and another being), save Kat and find the Creator before any one else has to suffer.Full of adventure, friendship, humor (the orgy comment by the Ogre still cracks me up), the power of love and a crazy dose of virtual reality. I'm so glad that I got a chance to read this book and I hope the next book will be released soon!

Great Concept but it Fizzled out at the end
The concept of being stuck in or addicted to virtual reality is not a new one but I like how this one was explored. The book opens with a lot of background on characters, you get to know their personalities so future decisions make sense. I was really drawn into the story and the first few forays into the Otherworld were amazingly written and fresh. The plot drew me along and I couldn't put this one down. However, at about 60% this book just kind of fizzled out as the real world faded and those issues were largely ignored while the Otherworld took over. I realize that it was a reflection of the addictive nature of the game and Simon's obsessive personality but there was a lot left open ended as far as real life issues that should have been addressed. I doubt Simon would have all this strength to be running around solving mysteries and fighting crime (in the game or in the real world) if he had been in Otherworld for the past three days without food or water for his real life body. I wanted these issues addressed because it really brought me out of the whole fantasy of the plotline.Another issue I found was that the characters maturity seemed to decline throughout the book. This regression was most notable with Kat's character as she goes from this formidable character, built up in Simon's constant descriptions of her, who is fighting the Company and the conspiracy single handedly, to a damsel in distress within a chapter. It's like her whole personality changes to suit Simon's hero complex, because throughout the book it does not seem like she needed his help at all, as she was facing all of the realms on her own with great success. I would be more interested to have the story partially told from her point of view.I'm continuing with the series in the hope that this issues will be addressed or resolved in the next book.

Not RP1, not by a long shot yet still entertaining
This book was a page turner for sure but.... a far cry to say that it feeds the craving for another novel like RP1. There are no real pop culture references and doesnāt relate to any decade like RP1 fed off everything great that came out of the 80s and decades surrounding it. Sure it literally has VR headsets and hipatic gear but thatās about the extent of its ālikenessā to RP1. It felt like a coming of age story wrapped up in futuristic tech with a murder mystery feel mixed in. Once I got past the fact that itās not RP1 or anything resembling it I enjoyed and it found it at times difficult to put down. Enough so that Iāll probably purchase the sequel as I would like to know what happens to the protagonists. If you like fiction novels based in a possible future reality that explores what happens when giant tech companies take things too far for greed or their twisted view of the good for mankind.... then buy this book. Worth the price albeit feeling swift and short.

Very enjoyable read for my 12 year old son.
I'm always looking for new books for my 12 year old son to read as he reads so quickly and has read all the obvious recommendations including maze runner, hunger games etc... We enjoyed ready player one and other reviews seemed to liken this book to it so thought we'd give this a try. My son says it is "very good" and is definitely suitable for a 12 year old. We will probably be giving the other books in the series a try next.
