Product description Newsies is Disney's 1992 return to that rarest form of film the live-action musical. With original music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman the music tells the story of the 1899 New York City newsboy rebellion against newspaper kings William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. The film was dead on arrival and played in some lucky local cinemas for two weeks. This was sad news considering that it could have been the beginning of a whole new musical generation. The music of Newsies has since gained a following and has a timeless appeal joining the roots of a great Broadway musical while attempting to fit the songs to their era. Despite the 1990s production we are expected to believe the songs might have been sung by newsboys in the 1890s. We don't of course -- the songs are too elaborate and pop driven (it is also likely that a newsboy who was more melodic than a hum or whistle would have been put in his place if the newsies are as rough as this film would have us believe). .com Arguably one of the oddest films to emerge from the modern Disney Entertainment empire, this scrappy 1992 live-action musical tells the tale of a turn-of-the-last-century labor uprising among New York City's newsboys (or "Newsies")--an especially ironic topic given the Mouse House's own historical labor relations problems. It was also a valiant attempt to revive the glory days of the Hollywood musical, and Alan Menken (fresh from his triumphs Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid) serves up a rousing retro slate of songs (with lyrics by Jack Feldman) that both evoke the Ragtime-era story and bring a musical revivalist's fervor to the task of reanimating one of filmdom's most endangered genres; a throwback to be sure, but an energetic and infectious one. --Jerry McCulley

I Can't Get Enough of These Voices and Songs
Extra! Extra! Alan Menken knows how to write songs for the screen and musical stage. He has created a series of singable and hummable tunes that make up the core of Newsies. Starting with the Disney film that became a cult classic in the '90's, and adding a new book by Harvey Fierstein, he has written new songs that brought the Newsies that appears now on Broadway to a new level and makes it a more satisfying story than that offered in the original film version. With Jeremy Jordan in the role of head Newsie Jack Kelly, backed up by a talented ensemble of singing and dancing Newsies and support characters, this original Broadway album is something I keep listening to over and over. I can't get the songs out of my head. The two versions of "Santa Fe" are gut-wrenchingly beautiful. "Sieze the Day," "King of New York," "Carrying the Banner," and "Something to Believe In" are all beautifully realized. Until you can get to Broadway to see this show live, the cast album is a good way to catch Newsies fever, or to refresh the images and sounds in your head if you have been lucky enough to see the show live.

This is my favorite musical of all time
I had never even heard of Newsies until I decided to audition for it on a whim since I wanted to get back into doing theatre. I almost backed out of the audition and I'm SO GLAD I didn't!Once I bought the Broadway soundtrack and started listening to it in the car I fell in love with this and now it's my favorite musical of all time. It is completely worth it to own a physical copy of the CD, not just digital. It's a great play and the music itself is perfect for when I need an upbeat soundtrack to get myself more energized.I wish I could have had the honor of seeing it on Broadway, but I had never even heard of it until well after it was long gone. I'm very grateful this recording of the original cast exists.

Amazing Soundtrack!
I first got hooked on Newsies when my middle school social studies teacher showed it to us. It is now one of my favorite movies so I couldn't wait to see the play on Broadway. I saw the play and it was unbelievable. I got home and instantly ordered this cd which is all i have been listening to for the past 2 weeks. There is a few songs that were specially written and not in the movie. Also most of the songs from the movie have been tweaked a bit but they are still recognizable. The last thing I would say is to realize that this is the ORIGINAL Broadway cast recording. The play has been out for almost 2 years now and about half of the cast has changed since the recording including the 2 main characters. That being said it is very difficult to tell the difference unless you really paid attention. Highly recommend this recording!

What an unexpected pleasure
Nothing but good things to say about this product (which is an excellent memento of the Broadway show)!! The solo singing is outstanding across the board, with Jeremy Jordan in top form. The songs by Alan Menken grow on you with each listen. The conducting is vigorous, but still sensitive to the tone of each song, just like for the stage. The chorus work is nothing short of fantastic. And, as is typical with Disney, the sound recording quality is superb; no distortion, a true reflection of voice and instruments. This is, alongside "Catch Me If You Can," the best recorded cast album of the last year or so. Even if you hated the movie (and who didn't), this musical recording is a great addition to any collection of musicals. It may not be "high art," but so what; it's fun, and beautifully performed.

Great Story, Great Music, Great Actors
Jeremy Jordan plays Jack (the lead) and he is just amazing. His performance of Santa Fe just makes the song that much better. (I watched the TV show "Smash" because of him, although he's only in the second season, and he is just as awesome in that. And it's a pretty darn good show. If anyone is looking for more Jeremy like I was, I highly recommend it.) Anyway, I haven't seen the "Newsies" movie, so I can't compare it to that. This is a great album to tap your foot and sing along too, even if you're unfamiliar with the show or film.

I have been a fan of the film musical and ...
I have been a fan of the film musical and soundtrack, and am now a fan of the stage soundtrack as well. There have been song and lyric updates from the original, but formate most part I feel they are an improvement. Vocals and harmonies and lyrics are top notch as I would expect from these composers, and I've spent many an hour singing along on a long car trip.
