My dislike steams from my opinion that he is using these ...
The pictures are of extreme faces. This aspect does not bother me. My dislike steams from my opinion that he is using these people, dehumanizing them. These "portraits" are large and intentionally as unflattering as "inhumanly" possible. Each photograph is accompanied by a blank page, yet there is not one word to humanize his subject. Gilden tells us nothing, not one word about their story, their life, dreams, etc. In the book it states' "Here are Bruce Gilden's people, his family." In truth he has treated them with no compassion, and to suggest that they are " family" seems to me pretentious, not genuine.I was going to give this book one star, but added one because the images are interesting.

AMAAAAAAZING AAAAAMAZING
Bruce Gilden is a lenz-genuis, a camera God. These wide angle facial portraits are awe inspiring . I am a photographer also and my work is on sites alongside Helmut Newton & Mapplethorpe and therefore I think I know a good shooter when I see one. Gilden is a marvellous shooter! Along with MARK SELIGER he rates as top of the pyramid.

This was one of two Gilden's books for a pro photographer's anniversary
Bruce Gilden is simply a genius nothing more nothing less.He isn't maybe as famous as other photographers are only because his images aren't edulcorated to made them more palatable to everyone taste. My EU's friend highly appreciated the gift I bought on Amazon EU.

How it is.
I am not on Facebook myself but many of the people I work with are. Out of curiosity I recently looked at the 'profiles' of some of them. Without exception they depict themselves as dynamic, interesting people with a social conscience. The only thing real about any of that is the disgusting and grotesque self-regarding narcissism of these people. In my experience, they are selfish, mean-spirited, cynical, malicious, devious, back-biting, whining, moaning nasty little swine. Gilden's book has the integrity to show the reality of what's really going on out there. The faces are horrible and sad to behold, but life in reality is often horrible and sad, quite unlike the fraudulent and phoney rendering of it of the unconscionable Facebook scum that I have to work with.

where everyone tries to create an online identity based around cool and flattering imagery about themselves and their lifestyle
In an age of narcissistic photography, where everyone tries to create an online identity based around cool and flattering imagery about themselves and their lifestyle, this comes as a refreshing reminder that we are all just filthy, disgusting animals.

In your face.
As a photographer I can't imagine having the nerve or, to be honest, callousness to take these photographs, but, somewhat hypocritically of me, I'm glad someone has.

More like "In Your Face." Excellent work from Gilden. Very fast delivery from the aptly named Speedyhen.

This is the best photo book I have bought in several years
First of all, this is a LARGE coffee table book. It's full of the most incredible portraits of the roughest looking characters you will ever see and yet it is sublime. This is the best photo book I have bought in several years. I love it.
