Note that this bulb is relatively small, which does not completely fill many recessed lighting fixtures. We recommend smaller bulbs in these fixtures so that the bulbs have airflow around them. The thermal signature of LED bulbs is very different than incandescent bulbs. An incandescent bulb becomes hot to the touch throughout the entire bulb. Likewise, high temperatures have a much less significant impact on bulb lifetime. LED bulbs are very different. The illuminated surface is cool to the touch, all the heat is generated behind the LED components. Current LED bulbs that are put into fixtures without proper airflow can fail rapidly as thermal overload will quickly destroy the LEDs or the control chips. These control chips can only tolerate temperatures of about 120 degrees without degrading the bulbs lifetime.
