What Is Punk?

I got this book months ago for my then 15mth old son (he is almost 2 now). My partner (his dad) has been a punk since we were in high school, and has been a drummer in so many punk bands I can’t keep up (ANTiSEEN is the most well known). All that to say, I got this as a gift for both he and my son, really. And y’all, our kid is OBSESSED with this book! We read it daily (yep, I have it memorized now), and I often find him in his room tucked in his reading corner lipping through this book.Awesome illustrations. Great breadth of bands. Fun for us to read 28252829165 times!

This book is perfect for the old punks waiting on a young punk. Great easy rhyme and rhythm, and a good chronological history of punk. Perfect baby shower gift to help breed a new generation of rad kids.

I love that the art looks like claymation. Nice little hard cover book.

As an old punk and GenXer with a young child, I had to get this book. I actually thought I was going to be disappointed like as if they were going to include modern power pop like Green Day or The Offspring. But no, whoever wrote this book has totally impressed! They just about covered all the major influencers of the day like Velvet Underground, Stooges, Black Flag, Pistols, X, Clash, Siouxsie, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, etc. Although I would have like to have seen a mention of Minor Threat or Bauhaus (as an offshoot), they actually jammed as many bands as they could in this little book. If you are an old punk or new punk this is a great little history book that is fun for the family.Side note: Ramones were power pop. :P

The world is changing. Kids are smarter, hipper, quicker, freer, tuned in, plugged in, grounded, airborne, imaginative, fanciful, and freer than ever. I must’ve read a hundred children's books a hundred times to my kids when they were growing up and today they’re multi-taskers who play a variety of instruments, write and perform their own music, create computer programs and poetry and art, commune with nature, are tolerant, kind, outward focused and generous, and better equipped than I to cope with the present and the onrushing future. I showed them “What is Punk?” and they connected with it instantly. Art and poetry and music! In one bright and righteous little book! Its pages scream with hope and joy and peace for all mankind!

we got this as a gift and loved it so much - we bought it for a birthday present! great book and so much fun to read! i highly recommend this book to any music lovers! such a fun journey through the history of punk.. it's like a great 90 second punk song:)

This book is fun, but they breeze past some very influential artists while spending a bit too much time on others. I like it, but if you are picking between the two, get the hip hop one.

This book hits a lot of the good punk bands from when I was younger and is great to read about them with my one year old son. He doesn't get it but hoping he eventually does. The only negative I have is there is no mention of Minor Threat, would have been great to have a page about early 80's straight edge in there.

Great book covering the formation of Punk through CBGB's to McLaren and Westwood through the late 70's. I know a few members of the Slits and they were delighted to see themselves represented as Morph/Wallace & Gromit style characters. A great book to teach your kids what music really is and what it can be. Punk AF! What's a more subversive way to explain Punk to kids than by using modelling clay! 10/10

AWESOME BOOK!!! If you grew up listening to punk music, then youve got to have this book to read to your kids! Very entertaining. I would reccommend this book to all punk fans.

Lustige Knete-Figuren stellen z.B. Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Siouxie und Germs sowie ein bisschen frühe Punkrock-Bewegung dar, dazu gibts niedliche Verse (natürlich in Englisch). Amüsant! Allerdings hört der Punkrock hier mit 2. Generation-Bands wie Misfits und Crass auf, für heutige Punks im üblichen Eltern-Alter, die eher mit Bad Religion oder gar Green Day aufgewachsen sind, womöglich etwas früh.
