Tremors didn't actually break any new ground (even though its tunneling worm monsters certainly did), but it revved up the classic monster-movie formulas of the 1950s with such energetic enthusiasm and humor that it made everything old seem new again. It's also got a cast full of enjoyable actors who clearly had a lot of fun making the film, and director Ron Underwood strikes just the right balance of comedy and terror as a band of small-town rednecks battles a lot of really nasty-looking giant worms. The special effects are great, the one-liners fly fast and furious between heroes Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward (and yes, that's country star Reba McEntire packin' awesome firepower), and it's all done with the kind of flair one rarely associates with goofy monster flicks like this. It was followed by a direct-to-video sequel, Tremors: Aftershocks. --Jeff Shannon Review: A modern classic, fun, and memorable - My first pass with Tremors was in college when I watched with a group of friends at the recommendation of one of them. He’d quote the movie all the time and we had to see it. Years on and I still love it. I play it in the background when working sometimes, but also sit with my wife (or by myself) from time to time in order to enjoy once again. Did that this week and come away still loving it. Still quotable, still funny, still memorable. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward lead a great cast in fighting off and running from underground monsters. As the film unfolds and the townsfolk try to outrun the giant wormlike things, we’re treated to great dialog, interesting moments, and far more relationships than gore. At times it seems more parody of classic monster films, but that’s part of the charm. The film would go on to inspire several sequels - none of which I’ve liked, but always appreciated their tongue-in-cheek take on the horror genre - but this one stands on its own as a modern classic. No desire to give anything away, so let’s just say I love this movie. It’s characters are at once rich and interesting, fun, and both unique and familiar. The dialog is great; I still quote it after all these years. And the story is fun and well done. Give Tremors a try and have some fun... Review: Classic. - What can I say, you can’t go wrong with this classic. Movie quality was great. Glad to have it in my collection.

Hits the sweet spot.
The other 5 star reviews on here have done a fantastic job of reviewing the cinematography and plot aspects of the film, so I'm not going to reinvent the wheel. The main thing I have to add is that it's remarkable that this movie, closing up on 30 years old, depicts a progressive concept of gender roles in a beautiful and sensible way that movies and the culture today could learn from. Really, the casting, acting and screenwriting is phenomenal in the way it makes a larger-than-life but entirely believable and likeable cast of characters. Nobody is exaggerated outside a human norm of ability nor behavior to a greater degree than anyone else, or at least this holds true for the leads and immediate supporting cast. You honestly don't want any of them to die! Anyway back to the gender roles: Kevin Bacon is the lead, no question, but as the movie rolls along it's harder to say that Rhonda doesn't get an equal share of the spotlight. She's in STEM but also outdoors-aware and an athlete, without losing her femininity. They even make fun of mansplaining in this film that was made before the word existed! In a scene where Rhonda shows a practical, stoic and frankly perfect way of dealing with the unintentional and habitual behavior that is much more effective than indignation. Beyond that, the male leads are male leads in the ways that males lead, as in, Val is the most leanly built, so of course he is likely to be the fastest runner. Earl is the strong older dude with old-time skills so he knows how to lasso and knows machines. The survivalists display a highly equitable partnership with the wife at least as deadly as the husband and is equally outspoken, forthright, and capable. Extra points for portraying the survivalist types as legitimately weird, with different lifestyle priorities, but not necessarily crazy... and for teaching the kids the importance of a solid communication system, when one is only loosely attached to civilization! Which brings to mind, the only character subject to negative stereotype is the young white boy, which, if prejudicial, is at least accurate and ultimately harmless. Even him, they at least gave the capacity to improvise a basic field dressing/tourniquet, which no kid living "out there" is likely to be incapable of at his age. Other supporting characters feature less prominently but you don't see the absurd dramatic panic that characterizes every antemortem scene I've seen in modern horror movies, especially those set in suburbia. A solid film, equal parts horror, action, comedy, and romance. No complaints as the credits roll.

Bought for a board game
I never heard of this movie. But I bought a board game called Terror Below so I wanted to watch the movie that inspired it. This movie is so cheesy! I thought it was going to be scary! The plot is simple and easy to follow. There is some progressive ideas - the PhD student is a woman and is smart and helps the guys escape. Of course, the country guy comes and saves the day out of sheer determination and common sense. There are the token Mexican and Chinese guys to add a splash of diversity, because this is “‘Merica!” after all. There’s the annoying teenager and weirdo girl with a pogo stick - which sort of reminds me of Jaws. What I liked: My favorite characters were the preppers because they are so ridiculous and yet believable. I thought the relationship between the two main characters was cute and I wish that sort of relationship was more present in modern movies. I liked the small town/country-ish/down to earth sort of theme. Would I watch this again? No. Would I watch the other movies in the series? Probably not. But the movie is a good specimen for geek culture and for understanding the back story for the board game which I did enjoy.

A Timeless Classic Revitalized in Stunning 4K Ultra HD
"Tremors" has been a favorite of mine for years, and I couldn't be happier with this 4K Ultra HD remaster. Having watched the movie countless times, seeing it revitalized with such clarity and detail is like experiencing it anew. The upgraded visuals bring out nuances in the cinematography and special effects that were less noticeable before, enhancing the suspense and charm that make this film a cult classic. The story remains as engaging as ever—a perfect blend of humor, horror, and action that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The characters are endearing, and the practical effects hold up remarkably well, especially now that they're showcased in high definition. I'm thrilled that they decided to remaster "Tremors," preserving its legacy for both longtime fans and new audiences to enjoy. If you love classic monster movies with a twist, this edition is a must-have for your collection. Highly recommended!

If you have never seen Tremors, then you've missed out on a great movie! Don't take it too seriously is my only advice. The Blu-ray disk has taken a lot of flak for the amount of noise reduction and edge enhancement it has gone through, but while it isn't the best presented Blu-ray I own, it's certainly not bad. After a couple of minutes, you really won't notice the restoration effects, as the story is what you're watching for after all! Most of the time, the scenery is clear, the detail is pretty good and there's no jitter that I can see. Sometimes, the faces look a little bland and lacking detail, but that could be down to the makeup as well as any processing that has gone on. Most importantly, it's true widescreen on this disk, unlike the earlier DVD release, which is letterboxed in 4:3 format, so has to be viewed in a zoom mode. Another criticism that has been levelled here is the dubbing out of swear words. It happens twice that I've noticed and yes, it is pretty obvious, but it's the TV version that's been used, so the dub is included. It's a bit annoying, but twice in a whole film is too little for me to knock off a star for. To sum up: I doubt that you'll see a better presentation of this film. A couple of minor shortfalls aren't enough to worry me and I am now able to enjoy one of my favourite late night viewing choices in near cinematic quality!
